I understand that it will not have the crummy Google skin but the snazzier Grand Central skin .

They will be applying for number blocks in Ireland in June ...or so I hear .

They will support inbound sms from day one in Ireland and possibly OUTBOUND sms .

    From the NYT
But in Skype, the dominant player in Internet calling, Google will find a formidable competitor. The service, which is free when people call other Skype users and carries slight fees for calls to regular phones, has 400 million registered users and is adding 350,000 users a day, eBay said. The company is focused on enhancing the service’s video and videoconferencing capabilities.
“Skype is light years ahead in terms of video, simultaneous chat and voice, and the installed base is huge,” said Ross Sandler, an analyst with RBC Capital Markets. “I don’t think they have anything to worry about.”

I had a Grandcentral account which I migrated over to google voice, I think I preferred the Grandcentral GUI.

I haven't used the service a whole lot over the last few weeks but it does seem to work quite well... the voicemail translation isn't great with an Irish accent though! It will be interesting to see what they charge for an Irish Geo number when they eventually offer them. I wonder will they offer porting? (Doubt it!)

I just received an invite for a Google Voice account.... of course I can't actually use it as they don't offer Google Voice here.

If you don't want to, mind passing it along?

I'm not sure if it's valid as an invite anymore as I did try and log in... you can have a go though... I shall PM the link.

I have mine on a regular ATA here in Ireland. All thanks to www.sipsorcery.com Works very well. And also via SIP on my mobile. Actually, it works a bit too-well, I get 3-5 robo-calls from the U.S. every day, and they don't take account of the time zone :-(

How does this sipsorcery work? I got an invite to Google Voice the other day, but it won't let me connect as I'm in Ireland...

First you need to be using a Windows OS, then you must install Silverlight ..... if you are still there after that you might get to see what is on the site!
Of course if you have Win XP you may also be in trouble with Silverlight .......

.... and they have the cheek to look for donations!!!!!

    <SNIP>.

Your "suggestion" is noted and ignored, along with your ad hominen abuse -- for the present.

    Seems I struck a nerve! :D

    1. The site requires Silverlight
    2. Silverlight requires MS Windows
    3. XP users are apparently having a problem updating to the latest version of Silverlight .... according to some forum posts.
    4. Yes SIPSorcery have been requesting donations to help support the project.
    5. The project is "open source" but access through the site is limited to those who are running the specified proprietary software. The source code may be available, but the project is not equally open to all.
    6. It is the successor to MySIPSwitch ..... which was open to all.

I would appreciate your refraining from personal abuse in any future posts addressed to me. It is unbecoming.

    regards.

Thanks (I guess...?) to Malachy - got a washington number setup that forwards to my blueface SIP extension - google voice rings me to confirm my number, but for some reason the DTMF is registered back to their system - must do some investigation at my end to right it
