    What do you think? I'm betting theres a big increase in Tax for classics, maybe even an abolition of our priviledges...

    There will be a tax on having fun as far as I see.... !

    Its not worth it in monetary terms to increase tax and get rid of our privelages for classic vehicles....!

    They definately will hit us with some BS tax to be fair..!

    We should all do what the farmers done a few years ago and just block Dublin with classic vehicles in protest...! Thats if the budget is not favourable...!

    They are talking about closing tax loopholes and classics may fall under that but implementation would be a nightmare now that VRT has moved to a CO2 based system. Ending the €48 road tax is a possibility, basing it on cc I suppose. Thankfully I got rid of teh 3.2 Jag and bought a 1600cc Lotus :D

    If they did remove the tax exemption I would expect a big upswing in "modern classic" sales. You can insure a 15 - 20 yr old car on a classic policy so assuming they change VRT as well there would be no advantage to owning a 30 year old Porsche over a 20 year old one

    I'm thinking of buying a classic in the next few weeks, a Spitfire. Should I wait and see what the budget holds or get it taxed and insured before the budget?

    TBH, I don't think classics will be affected much if at all. There aren't enough of them for it to make financial sense. If, for example, classic motor tax was abolished, most of the hard-hit cars would simply be sold back into the UK.

    you can only sell cars back to the UK for a tithe of what people value them at here and dont forget they are deep in the mire too so I cant really see anyone buying and loads of people trying to sell....

    most classic car shows/rallies are for charitable causes and so I don't think they will hit us too hard. There are bigger issues than a few old cars on the road, so maybe an NCT for classics and a plugging of a few loop holes?

    I also think the savings would be too small to make it worthwhile taking on a whole community of stubborn enthusiasts who'd want nothing more than to take to the streets in protest.

    NCT on classic cars, don't make me laugh hahahahah
    NCT centers are not equiped to test classic cars. Their machines are not set up for classics. The only way to test them would be a test on the open road, which would mean open insurance for all NCT testers, which would cover them on the open road and not just at their test centers. I don't think the government could afford it!!!

    How do other countries test classic and vintage cars? I bet they don't take them for test drives?!

    A basic test of some sorts on classics would be no bad thing IMHO ...incl motorbikes (modern and classic!)

    As regards the budget, I too doubt the govt will bother messing about with the road tax or vrt on classics. Perhaps maybe a small adjustment re the vrt. However, it would be a waste of time dramatically increasing the vrt rates for vintage/classic vehicles for two reasons -

    A. With the economic downturn, less classics will be imported so less vrt to be gained by increases

    B. A big increase in vrt would 'kill off' the importation of classics (...just like it has done to the sale of cherished registrations since the govt increased the cost of them from €375 to €1000 last October (...madness IMO!)

    I don't think that they will bring in an NCT - the budget is about revenue the NCT is by and large about safety. VRT changes I would imagine would only happen if they were changing all VRT rates and I would have though that would only happen in a "proper" budget as it is administratively quite complex.

    A cc based road tax on all cars with no age exemptions though would be very easy to bring in, could be justified under "green" interests and would raise a not inconsiderable amount of money. I have no idea how many classics there are here but I do know that some counties were running out / low on ZV numbers so there must be several thousand - possibly tens of thousands. Older cars often have bigger engines so you could be looking at anything up to a grand per classic. Assume there are 20,000 classics in the country (one for every 200 people) and an average of a grand per car and that's €20,000,000 extra for the coffers per year. That's a lot of teachers salary's, which is how it'll be presented.
