New battery for my Micra?

I bought a 98 Micra months ago as a friend was leaving the country and selling it fairly cheap.
The only problem with the car was that if it wasn't started for 2/3 days it would need a jumpstart. They provided a portable rechargeable jumpstart kit with the car.

I didn't even have a provisional at the time, I've gotten one since but the car has very rarely been started and I haven't taken it out on the road at all.

The last time I started it I left it running for 20 mins or so and then turned off the engine. Immediately after it wouldn't start without the starter kit.

Is there any hope for the battery? Should I just get a new one?

If I do need a battery I would be wary of driving it to a garage myself ( I'm a noob and it's bound to cut out on the way )
WOuld it be easy to buy a battery somewhere and install it myself? Or would it be mad expensive to get someone to come and do it for me?

Now I've shown how clueless I am, flame away ;)

A battery from a factors cant be that expensive for a MIcra, They are also obliged to take the old one from you. A battery that is seldom used will suffers more damage than a battery that is in regular use.

I see you're in Dublin somewhere... If you're anywhere near tallaght the place just across from the IT (think it's called square-fit) will do it fairly cheap. 70-80 euro, supply, fit and take away the old battery.
