Email Changeover FYI

Got an email off computer services this evening. It appears they are moving all students over to the new Microsoft StudentMail email solution.

Even though Microsoft probably isn't the best or most favourable offering they could have chosen it is about time that they moved everyone over. Webmail was unusable between 10am to 6om everyday.

    Here be the information
Important Change to Student eMail and Service disruption on 18/19 March 2009

    Thursday, 12th of March, 2009

In order to provide a reliable email service during the upcoming busy academic period for students registered prior to 21 August 2008, Computer Services are replacing the current WebMail service with an upgraded service called StudentMail.

This change will affect almost 10,000 students. Note that there are a small number of exceptions – details available online. All students who will be affected by this change will receive an email to their NUI Galway address which contains details of their new StudentMail account.

N.B. A student’s email address will not change.

Please note carefully the following sequence of events:

    1. The changeover period commences at 18:00 on Wednesday, 18 March and runs through Thursday, 19 March. The new service will be available from Friday, 20 March.

    2. Students will be unable to send email from or receive email to their NUI Galway email address from 18:00 on Wednesday, 18 March and on Thursday, 19 March. Students can continue to access their WebMail account during the changeover period. Email sent to affected students during this changeover period will bounce back to its sender as undeliverable.

    3. On Friday, 20 March, the new StudentMail account will be available; all new incoming messages to the student email address will be directed to it. Students will receive login instructions for the new service by email to their WebMail account from Thursday, 12 March.

    4. The existing WebMail account will remain available until 31 May 2009 so that students can login with current credentials and access old mail. Students will no longer be able to send or receive email using the WebMail service after 18:00 on Wednesday, 18 March.

    5. It is recommended that students download the full content or selected messages from their WebMail inbox to their new StudentMail account using instructions available online

    6. Note that any existing forwarding set up by a student from the NUI Galway email address to any other email service provider will no longer function from 18:00 on Wednesday, 18 March.

If you have any queries about this change or about the StudentMail service, please consult our online FAQ and if the answer is not available, please contact the User Support Centre (Tel. x3325 eMail usersupport@nuigalway.ie).

Computer Services would like to apologise for the inconvenience caused and to thank students and staff for their co-operation with this change.

From what I've read, Exchange is about as good as you can get and along with Blackberry is the standard in the business world. So, yes, they did choose the best solution and about ****ing time we got onto it. Nice now that I don't have to have my college emails going to me gmail account anymore.

Anyone know if it will be possible to set up email forwarding from this new system?

As far as I know Exchange uses IMAP, so you should be able to hook it up with your gmail account easily.

A first year should know. They've had the system since registration. I'd say you can though.

I don't know if it's actually Exchange but it does support IMAP.

Liking the new setup. Not just have to wait for Snow Leopard so I can sync up my contacts and calender with my iPhone properly.

Are you sure your account wasn't disabled? CS put up a bulletin about disabling old accounts a while back:

Did you want to forward your new mail to your Gmail or to your Hotmail? There's instructions on how to forward to Gmail here (as posted above by ZorbaTehZ):

Thank you! wonder if i could them divert my gmail to my hotmail...hmmm

Yeah if you want to forward to your Hotmail just setup a Gmail account, set it up to retrieve the college email through the POP/IMAP as with the instructions above, then set your Gmail to forward all incoming mail to your Hotmail.

Why people are still using Hotmail is beyond me!

I think the college should have gone for a Gmail-based solution. Google offer it for free to colleges, afaik Trinity use it. And we're using it for our club emails.

If you mean that you want to forward your studentmail to your hotmail then log in your main hotmail account, top right corner where it says your name, click the arrow next to that and choose "Link other accounts", then enter the info for your student email account.

Same reasons businesses don't use Gmail, Exchange is the **** and is fully integrated into damn near every smartphone out there. Gmail for personal mail is great, but Exchange has plenty of advantages over it for the lecturers....students...well, once I get full Exchance support for my mac it'll be great.

He'd be better off forwarding hotmail to studentmail.

    https://accountservices.msn.com -- link your accounts.

Then log in to home.live.com with one (has to be the studentmail one for me for some reason). You can switch between them by clicking the arrow beside your name in the top right.

I'm still on the crappy Webmail, they told me I wouldn't be changed over to StudentMail until the summer break.

Luckily I have my college emails forwarding to a Gmail account which in turn is pushing the emails to my Blackberry so I don't have to login to the aweful Webmail website to check my emails.
