vista vs xp?

    Im looking at getting a hp 2140 for college but i dont know if i should get the 2gb ram and vista basic the nn356ea model on their website or the 1gb ram xp version the nn355ea model?

    and if i bought the 2gb ram + vista could i put xp on to it as i have the cds that came with my old laptop?

    i was told the higher ram would make the laptop faster and xp is better than vista so to downgrade?

    i dont know too much about computers but some friends of mine have vista and hate it so i dont want to get burnt!
