An old work collegue told me that he took part in a shotgun course. He said it came to a local pub. Seemingly with it he got everything with the gaurds a lot easier (new licenses etc). I would like to do it just for the sake of it. Any info on it would be great, websites etc. He did it about ten year ago so it might not even be around anymore.

NARGC do a proficiency course if you are a member of a NARGC club.

    Deer shooters have HCAP.

    All ranges have proficiency courses.

Other than that I don't know of any other "recognised" training that Gardai will accept

I did my course with the NARGC about 6 months ago in tipperary, went on from 9.30 - about 4 ish, i enjoyed it they talked about rifles and shotguns and went into great detail. I got a hat and a certificate and got to do some clay shooting with o/u's.

ICPSA coaches do them too with with a cert that seems to be recognised by supers - certainly down my way. The proficiency course covers everything to do with shotguns, their safe handling etc. Pupils even get a bit of basic coaching and get to shoot some clays. The courses are done on a one to one basis so it's one pupil with one coach.
