today my gf broke the key in her barrell.
i had a look at it and saw the key broke DOWN in the barrel.i tried putting the other half of the key in to meet it but it did not turn.

i have searched for some info on it and found this
    http://www.cavweb-forums.co.uk/showthread.php?p=1810878

its not clear tho.i need to know if i drill the barrell does it pop ouy so then i can put a new one in its place.

also can i get a barrell from a breakers yard.if so i suppose two keys will be in operation.
    any help appreciated.

how much of the key is in the barrel? and how much is remaining?

if say 80% is in the barrel, you might be able to drill into the back of the key with a dremel.... then get something stuck in the hole you've drilled and extract the remainder of the key.

Once you have the key out, most lock smiths will be able to clamp the two halfs together and cut a new key....

definitely worth trying before trying to remove the barrel etc...

dont think i can drill the back of the barrell as there is electrical contacts in the way and plastic housing on it.
whats a dremmel? just in case i get the contacts and plastic out of the way

OP, take a picture of what you can see in the barrell and post it up here. Can you see the broken piece in the barrell???

EDIT: Don't go drilling unless it's a last resort...

You could try a tiny amount of superglue on the stub and push it in to mate with the part still in the barrel.

You would real'y want a tiny amount so no excess gets forced out gluing the broken bit in the barrel for good.

First make damn sure which way round the key has to be to get a perfect match with the bit in the lock. Apply a fraction of a drop to the stub with a needle or pin. Push the two parts firmly together making sure you don't move or jiggle for a few seconds, then try to pull the key out absolutely straight without any bending moment.

Alternatively, call a locksmith for advice.

id really be afraid of using glue on it as i could fcuk the whole barrrel up and like you said glue the key into the barrell.
    thanks

    you miss understood me....

I didn't mean drill the back of the barrel... i meant get a dremel down they way the key normally goes.... drill a hole the remains of the key, then try get a long narrow self tapper to catch inside the hole.... or even send down a bit of wire the same size as the dril bit into the hole with some super glue on it

or if you can get the barrel out, bring it to a good traditional lock smiths, if your in dublin there's one on pleasant street (just off camden street) and he'll be able to get the broken bit out.....

Would it possible to get a grip on the little bit of the key exposed with a needle nose pliers or is that plain optimistic :D

i got the barrell out but the piece of die cast metal at the end of the barerel is broke.

if i get a new one from a breakers yard and a key will i need to get the code reader for the immobilizer also.
or will the ecu reject the new key and reader.
if so is there another way out of this.
