Fashion in College

    Hi everyone,

I'm currently working on an article and I was wondering if any of you would be willing to give me your opinions regarding fashion in Irish colleges. I would be extremely interested to hear your views. Do you think it is all about being seen? Does it put students under pressure to dress a certain way? Do you think that college is nearly worse than secondary school with regards to judgement based on appearance?

There are so many differing views on this, I want to hear yours!

I don't think there's any pressure. I'm in NUIG and the majority of girls slob about in UGGs and tracksuit pants or jeans. I always feel a little overdressed tbh and I normally dress quite casually in a skirt and flats.
It's nowhere near as bad as school with people hassling you about your appearance.

I think that there is ten times less pressure in college. Girls in NUIM tend to be quite casual with uggs and tracksuits. I think there is much more scope to express your own style in college. I like to dress up because thats part of my personality but I have friends that wear casual outfits and there is no competition or bitchyness like there was in secondary.

Don't see many really well dressed people in college. With the girls it's usually 'everybody's the same' D4 clothes, trackies or the GAA jersey of whatever county they're from.

Lads usually wear either casual D4 clothes(ambercrombie, jeans or shorts) or skinny jeans/80s t-shirt kinda of style.

With both guys and girls, anyone who overdresses usually gets funny looks, especially the lads. Some girls can pull overdressing in college off if they're particularly stunning.

I'm not giving out though,it's only college. It's easier just to slip on a t-shirt and jeans if you're just going to some classes and maybe lunch for a few hours.

hey! dont think theres pressure in college in comparison with school. Im in final year in UL and there are definate 'looks' so to speak.

    Guys:

-a&f/AE/any other such brand to show you were a j1er tshirt and canteburys is pretty much the norm. That or jeans and tshirt/jersey hoody.

-very few guys here doing the whole skinny jean look thankfully

    Girls:

-a lot of the younger 1st and 2nd girls are rocking the messy hair which took two hours to do look paired with a&f hoody and jeans/oneills and uggs and the obligatory guess handbag to complete the look

-regular jeans and nice top and coat and pumps look

-and then the ones who really dress up... nice dress, tights, boots, hair and tan done well...

God, that look will never stop making my eyes bleed.

Same thoughts as most other people really. I don't think there's pressure in college generally. I think any pressure felt is something that an individual feels themself rather than pressure being put on them by other people. IMO it's more the idea that they should look the same as everyone else, not that they have/want to.

I used to slob around in jeans and converse, one of my friends would always turn up in dresses, another would wear her skinny jeans with gorgeous little ankle boots. Some guys turned up in tracksuits, some guys in jeans and shirts. Everyone just did their own thing and we were all perfectly happy! :)
