Just a thread to see how many people are heading along on Sunday? My second dualathon(first being last months) so I'm hoping to improve slightly on last months.

Thinking about heading along myself but i don't expect to better last months time as i'm heading to Utd v Liverpool on Saturday. I arrive back on the ferry Sunday morning so i'm not sure how much sleep i'll have gotten. Hopefully it's a quiet boat but should Utd win i'd imagine there'll be a noisey crowd aboard! (7 hr sailing from Liveropool)

Must look at getting my team ready for the duathlon alright.

Team TT? I must keep an eye out for it this time.

I'm thinking of doing it for a bit of fun - will be my first duathlon! I know a couple of other runner types who will be joining in also. I am tempted to chicken out and just run the St. Patricks 5k, but this sounds like much more fun.

    Questions:
    - What do people recommend in relation to toe clips & runners vs. changing between cycling shoes are runners?
    - How difficult is the transition from the bike to run going to be? Will my legs turn to jelly? :)
    - How is the bike transition area organised? Is it first come first served in relation to getting the prime transition spots?
    - Will I need food or drink? I wouldn't in a run lasting an hour, but perhaps this is different.
    - Would you recommend aero bars?

All these questions - guess I'll find out the answers myself on Sunday if I don't get recommendations :)

Definitely. One of the most enjoyable cycle routes in the race calendar.

If you have Lock laces for your running shoes, then I find you can make the transition fairly quickly and I much prefer cycling shoes personally. There are tricks you can do if you have triathlon-specific cycling shoes involving pre-attaching the shoes to the pedals and using elastic to hold them horizontal. I couldn't find mine last time though and used SPD shoes with three straps and my transition time was fairly reasonable.

My legs felt like jelly when I got off the bike although looking at my splits, my pace didn't slow from the first run. I think half of it was pscyhological, I felt like I was going so fast on the bike that once I got back running it felt like I wasn't moving...

Definitely not food anyway. The weather last time was cool enough so I didn't bother with a drink either, but having a bottle for the bike would be nice if the weather was hot.

If you have them and you're able to fit them properly. They do make a big difference in a non-drafting event.

Already registered for the 5k at the mansion house, but was half considering the trying the duathlon, knees a bit sore at the moment so what are the surfaces like in punchestown (run and bike)? how big is the field? and can I just turn up on the morning or will it be fully subscribed?

    thanks

Run is on tarmac ambulance road around the racecourse. Bike is on public road. Last month there was no problem registering on the day. Field was about 150, not sure if they hit a limit or just had that many on the day. EUR17 + extra EUR10 for one day racing license if you're not a member of Triathlon Ireland.

Will you really gain the lost time from changing from runners to bike shoes in such a short race?

I'm tempted to use runners with toe-clips on the bike leg. My cadence technique is poor anyway so I tend to just mash away.

I did one duathlon in the park a couple of years ago and was passed by what felt like hundreds of people as i changed shoes. Going out on my sixth lap of five probably didn't help either so Sunday's one lap should help!

    Looking forward to it anyway:)

The loss in power on the bike is huge.

So many people do this in the end? Great weather for it.

Not me, decided against it in the end. Missed quite a bit of running recently through illness, and wasn't feeling fit enough for a race. Went for a cycle with some the boards cycling crew instead.

Great weather alright, much nicer day for it that 3 weeks ago! Was there a good turnout? How did you get on yourself?

I was there. Really enjoyable day. Dry and warm but not too warm. No idea what time I did yet.

yeah i went along. I got home from the ferry at 7am, set the alarm for 9 and got another 2 hours sleep. woke up not feeling up to it but as soon as i looked out the window i said to myelf that if i didnt get up on a day like that what would that say about me!

I wasnt going to set any amazing time for myself but I went along just to take part but in the end i was very pleased. I'm not sure where i finished but I'm hopeful of another top 20. The day was perfect. A little gusty but not too bad and hence i enjoyed it a lot more. Looking forward to the results.

Who won it does anyone know?

Mark Doyle. He dropped second place on the last km of the run.

Was he leading at the turnaround of the cycle? And how'd you get on Tunney? Where you happy with your day?

Yes but he was quickly got and slipped into third place. First in off the bike was a Wicklow guy but he over cooked the bike and was practically walking on the run.

I was happy with the day. Fits well into my IM training, decent training day, some interesting HR and power data to play with.

Was definitely good fun. Managed a podium finish on my first duathlon, so very pleased with that - ran out of road to catch the first 2 :) There were 3 duathlon novices in our car on the way down to race and we all figured in the top 7 - either potential or beginners luck

Couldn't believe how difficult the cycle was - I really suffered for the first half on the bike, particularly with the hills. But on the easier 2nd half I coped ok. As for the running - that's were I made all my time - the splits should make entertaining reading. Tempted to give duathlons/triathlons a proper go, but have some unfinished business chasing times running first ...

Results up - some great running Bazman. Fastest I've seen on that course.

This is way you start thinking "If only the run was a little longer I could have been first" and I start thinking "If only the bike was a little longer.........."

Four Rathfarnham runners in top 7 :)

Nice one, fair play!! I presume you'll do the Road Relays in a few weeks and then add in a few track races (you could try the 3k steeple:eek:) and then you'll probably have completed every aspect of a running race within a few months, you bring new meaning to the term multi-sport:D

How did your times on the runs compare to others, did you take much out of them?

Can't complain - obviously it's a fair enough split between cycling and running. 12th on the bike - room for improvement there :) I did suffer

No regrets on using toe-clips as my transitions were good and don't think I would have made up that time on the bike.

Moral of the story is you should all come down to Rathfarnham to improve your running :)

Road relays, 10k, track (1500m, 5k), 10mile, half marathon - that the plan I think

He took quite a bit out of us.

Dat Duathlon was great fun, it's only a pity we didn't do race one and two as well. Think I could have been a bit quicker on the bike, mentally fell alseep for a few sections.
Went with the running shoes and toe clips and was happy with the decision, it would be great to have another race to try the shoe swapping thing for comparison.
I saw the winner making his transition from run to bike and he was quick quick quick. He had his shoes off in the same time as he had his helmet on, good co-ordination. Bazman had a storming last run, from 6th through to 3rd in two miles is pretty good going, he passed me like a train and even had breath for a cheery hello (the fexker :) )
