Jury Duty

    Hi.

I'm 20 and a full time student. I recently got a summons for Jury duty in late April, and although no assignment deadlines or exam dates have been set, I would expect them to be at about this time, certainly I would be affected should the case be a long one.
The wording on the "excusable as of right" section of the pamphlet I received wasn't entirely clear. I would very much like to participate, not only as I realise it is my duty, but I am also very interested in legal affairs. Does anyone know where I stand?

    Thanks.

*@Mods: Please move to appropriate forum, if there is one. Thanks*

You have a right as a full time student to be excused so it's really your call. If you will have assignments/exams around that time well I dont think you need anyone here to tell what to do, bear in mind also that although you have been summonsed and you decide to go down to the courts there is no guarantee you will get picked to serve.

If you were summonsed and interested in serving but like the OP would really prefer nt to serve at the time in question, can you ask to defer service til say mid summer or other time? or do you just use your right to be excused as of right?

As far as I know, if you say you cannot do jury duty at x time for whatever reason, you just go back into the database of available jurors.

You cannit defer your service to a specified time - there is a huge potential for abuse if that were to be the case.

Carawaystick, I may have misunderstood you, but you cannot just decide you don't want to do jury duty. You have to have a valid reason.

Yes one of the valid reasons to be excused as a right is being a full time student which the OP is so it's not a problem.

Full time students are exempt as of right.

    See http://www.courts.ie/courts.ie/library3.nsf/WebPageCurrentWeb/936CF234C30E91B8802570990055C520?OpenDocument&l=en

DO NOT forget to complete the procedure by returning the summons and to claim exemption. You will then receive an offical excusal from service for this time.
