Positive story about dealing with the VRO.

So with all the complaints recently (most deserved) about omsp's, appealing VRT etc I thought I would tell a positive story about my dealings with the VRO

I was living in the UK for a year up until last September and so I wanted to take advantage of the VRT exemption.

Now through laziness etc etc I have had the car in the county since the start of September and didn't go to register it until last week. I had my mind made up to do it last week but then couldn't make it to the VRO so I decided to send in a friend to do it (didn't think they had a hope of doing it for him). I gave him all my documents and the forms which I had filled out and signed. I had been told before that they would take my stuff and consider my case and get back to me but when my friend went in they looked through what I had and ten minutes later out he walked with the job done. They were excellent to deal with and very nice in there and didn't mention looking at the car (which was just as well as I was at the other end of the country with it). The impression my friend got was they are so sick of people chancing their arm they are only glad to be helpful when dealing with a genuine case.

Now for any one who genuinely wants info on getting the exemption here is what they wanted from me.

*P45 from UK job.

*A few payslips for the last 6 months of living in the UK.

*A UK insurance cert to prove the car was used outside the country for 6 months before moving back.

*The ferry ticket to show when the car entered the country.(They were not bothered that I had the car in Ireland for the last 6 months)

*Proof of owning the car for more than 6 months(VLC is enough for this)

*A few bank statements as proof of living in the UK, now this is the only time they wanted anything for further back than the 6months before moving back and I don't think they were too concerned which surprised me as I thought they would be more strict on proving I was a full year living outside the country(which I was)

*Proof of a permanent return to Ireland(this surprised me a bit) They wanted solid proof I had returned as in a payslip or copy of a work contract or returning to college.

I had other stuff also like being on the voting register etc but they were not bothered about that stuff.

Glad to hear this success story!! Moving back from the UK soon and will be importing car, have researched this pretty well and have all the documents mentioned above ready and waiting for the VRO so hopefully all should be ok!!

I hope you have bought something v expensive to make the maximum gain from the exemption! It would be foolish not to.
