I'm not 100% sure but I don't think it would be legal to buy a wild bird unless the seller has a wildlife dealers license. I'm not even sure you could give a bird away.

    Anyone know the rules?

Had this been posted in For Sale/Wanted, it would have earned the OP an infraction at the very least:
    5. Live Animals
Within the norms of Shooting/Hunting as practised in Ireland, live animals may be offered for sale.
For the moment, this is restricted to gundogs and ferrets; if you wish to trade in any other type of animal, contact the forum mods by PM before posting anything.
Specifically prohibited are wild animals, animals related to Fox Hunting (mounted) & Coursing, and animals for use as bait or decoys.
Pets and other domestic/domesticated livestock (horses, cattle, etc) are also prohibited.
All the normal rules regarding legality and commercial selling strictly apply.

This sort of thing has previously been discussed with law-talkers and representatives of the NPWS, leading to the inclusion of the above in the quoted Charter; so, in the interests of not leading Boards.ie or its users into an occasion of sin, thread closed.
