Withdrawing mid-way through recruitment process

Hoping for a bit of help here. I applied for a public service type job a couple of months ago. I've done the technical tests etc. and have now gotten through to second interview stage. Being public service this has taken a long time...and now I'm more interested in other positions being advertised within that organisation. I want to withdraw at this stage rather than waste their time and apply for another position currently being advertised. Is this likely to hack them off and risk my chances of the other position? I figure going to interview and potentially turning down the job if offered it is slightly worse!

Can you not keep the original application and apply for the other positions as well? There is no guarantee that you will get the 1st job and the odds are you could be on a waiting list for a while anyway.

The public service recruitment process is very structured and formal/impersonal.
Each job application is treated completly separately so nothing you do while your applying for one job will impact on another one.

So you can pull out of that comp without it affecting anything else.
