Can't see it happening -but you never know!

    Slumped

    From: http://www.golf.com/golf/tours_news/article/0,28136,1884184,00.html

For the first time in his career, Sergio Garcia has a mathematical chance to be No. 1 in the world.

Tiger Woods has been atop the world ranking for the past 144 weeks - dating to June 12, 2005 - and his 21.542 points were more than twice his nearest challenger after winning the U.S. Open in June.

But he missed the next eight months following knee surgery, and while Garcia has only won twice since then, the Spaniard has been runner-up four times, including two FedEx Cup playoff events and the PGA Championship.

Garcia, who was 16.278 points behind Woods after the U.S. Open, trails him by a mere 1.59 points. To become No. 1 in the world, Garcia would have to win the CA Championship and have Woods finish 27th or worse.

``It would be nice to accomplish something like that, and more than anything, when is around, which is even tougher,'' Garcia said Tuesday. ``But you can't say more than that on it.''

The odds of that happening are not in his favor.

Woods will not be outside the top 27 and even if he does...Sergio is playing cr*p at the moment so he has very little chance of winning.

Sergio isn't so much playing crap, he just seems to have a few loose bits to his game. If he can sort them out he could do it.

I think Tiger will still be very much a work in progress, so a top 27 finish is by no means guaranteed.

Sorry to be mean!!!! Ive just booked my ticket to watch Sergio defend at Sawgrass and maybe he will have as good a week as last year and be real close to that number one spot by May

Sergio, tee to green is playing the best golf in the world.

First in GIR last week. I think he was last in putting stats. He only needs to have a half decent week on the greens to have a chance to win.

That's the story of his career though - if only he could putt!!!

Good luck to him but personally I'm no fan of Garcia's. His behaviour in the past has has turned me off him, e.g. spitting in the hole in some US tournament which he later denied but it was caught on camera, his lack of grace when losing to Harrington in Majors twice, and his comment last week when asked what he thought of McIlroy - "he reminds me of myself 10 years ago". Talk about me, myself, and I.

It’s a damn shame Sergio comes across that way. I’ve been a big fan, I love watching him play. He used to be a likeable, flamboyant, charismatic character - but I agree, he seems to be a bit too full of himself these days. He’d do well to learn from his mate Nadal.
On the comparison with Rory, yes there was as much hype about Sergio when he burst on the scene, but Rory is more grounded, and there’s no cringe factor when he gives an interview. Plus, in 10 years time I reckon Rory will have at least one major under his belt.

Even if Sergio doesn't do it this week, (and the odds of him winning and Tiger being 27th or worse must be pretty slim) if Tiger doesn't get into the top 10 at least, his ranking will decline further and Sergio will have more chances. I think he might just do it in the next few weeks if tiger doesn't do well this week.

Sergio is 20-1 to win it with paddypower.com.

Tiger is Mr WGC though - his record in them is unbelievable. I think the majors and the WGCs are his main targets every year.

I can't see Sergio doing well in the Masters either -can't putt well enough and missed the cut the last 2 times. So if he gets the number 1 slot I can't see it lasting.

Its hard to see Garcia's becoming World Number 1 after his 1st round performance at the CA Championship . Its seems to be the same old story, gets himself into good positions, then he cannot sink the putts.
