Parliament committee approves wholesale data roaming prices Tuesday 10

Members of the European Parliament's industry committee have approved a proposed price cap on wholesale data and SMS prices while roaming in the EU. The MEPs voted in favour of a retail price cap of EUR 0.11 per text message, in line with the proposal from the European Commission. The wholesale price cap on data downloads was lowered to EUR 0.50 per MB, from the EC proposal of EUR 1. On voice calls, the committee backed a cap of EUR 0.40 per minute while roaming for the period after 2010, while the EC had called for further reductions. The MEPs agreed to extend the voice roaming regulation by two years to 2012, rather than until 2013 as the EC requested. The differences from the EC proposals mean the legislation will require further negotiations before the proposals go to a final vote in the full parliament, expected in April. The committee also voted in favour of forcing operators to bill per second from the first second of a roamed call, versus the EC proposal for charging per second from the 31st second of a call.
