The original didn't actually 'end' as this series is about to. It was cancelled by the network execs.

They did find Earth, and as far as I can remember, had to leave it because the Cylons were hell bent on destroying it.

The Galactica basically kept on going once they found it to protect the primitive people of the early 1980s.

I don't recall Adama dying in the final episode(s).

The original ended kinda abrubtly (due to it being cancelled). The Galactica was left flying throught space and if my memory is right the last scene was of a scanner/radio picking up a faint signal from Earth

Fast forward to Galactica 1980, it started with them having found earth but unable to go to it because if the Cylons (who wanted to destroy it). They ended up sending a few of their pilots and a gang of annoying kids down while the fleet kept a safe distance. This series finished/was cancelled after one season, with a 2 parter explaining what happened to Starbuck (neither he nor Apollo appeared in this second series)

Galactica 1980 was supposedly one of the worst pieces of Sci-Fi ever shown on television.

No supposedly about it. It was brutal.

The one good moment was when the cylons sent a scouting party to Earth in the shape of a skin job and a Centurion, their ship crash landed and they had to hitch a ride. It was halloween and a few hippies on the way to a costume party picked them up. One of the hippies turned to the Centurion and commented on how cool his costume was. LOL.

Low point was the flying scouts, flying motorcylces and a weird shuttle craft from Galactica that looked like a flying saucer from Close Encounters of the Third Kind.

Yeah, they picked up a transmission from earth, I think about the moon landing or something.

EDIT: I actually remember seeing that episode with the centurion "costume", I think it was broadcast as a TV movie.

A bad way for a Cylon to end alright:

Though even the cylons are suffering from the recession:

The last scene afaik was when Starbuck, Apollo, Cassiopeia and Sheba were monitoring radio waves, just after they left the room the tv screen picked up footage of Neil Armstrong walking on the moon for about 5 seconds.

A bit of original BSG trivia:

Baltar died at least twice in the original series. In the pilot movie he was beheaded by a toaster only for the producers to change it when they redid it as a two part season opener. He also died or we were made to believe he died on Kobol when the cylons blasted the ruins and he was trapped underneth the rubble.

Boxey's mother was played by actress, Jane Seymour better known as Dr Quinn, medican woman.

Fred Astaire appeared in an episode as a conman pretending to be Starbuck's estranged father.

Patrick MacNee from the Avengers was the voice of the opening credits and of the Cylon baseship commanders. He also appeared in an episode as a demon type character dressed in a white robe.

In the opening episode of BSG 1980 Dr Zee, the child genius, had an American accent and wore glasses, in later episodes he lost the glasses and had an English accent.

    That is absolutely priceless! Hahahaha.

Something similar happened in an episode of the A-Team... they were at a fancy dress party, a centurion walked by and Face points and says, hey, i think i know that guy...:D

Yep, it's in the credits (43 seconds in):

(youtube wouldn't allow it to be embedded)

I remember that glactica80. Was absolute horsesh*te. they had this annoying genius kid called doctor somethingorother (Well, not somethingorother if ya know). They used to show the same shot of the flying bikes every episode 2 or 3 times and the effects of that one "cool" shot was dodgy looking even then. The last episode was cool alright 'cos it was actually that doc kid telling Adama how he came to be. It involved Starbuck crashing on a planet. Rebuilding a cylon that crashed at the same time. Made him friendly of course. Then, somehow, the cylon finds a mysterious woman (Wizards did it suppose). She and face do the biz. Face was rebuilding his viper and he put her in it and sent her off. Last we saw of Face.

And one of the pilots sent to earth was a grown up Boxey

As an eight-year old (RTE first showed Galactica in 1983), I recall being completely confused as pretty much all of the cast had changed with no indication why, having missed the first five minutes of the show. Even an innocent child who'd watch any auld crud knew that it was awful.

Never saw the Return of Starbuck episode, I'd dumped the show before it aired. Like the last three episodes of Only Fools & Horses, the Pinky, Elmyra and the Brain spinoff and a few other things, I pretend Galactica 1980 never happened. While it was part of the international syndication run, it isn't even part of the DVD set (though it can be picked up separately if you're that way inclined).

Does anyone remember the EXCELLENT episode where Starbuck was stranded with a Cylon and a pregnant woman?...it was excellent, it reminded me ALOT of that 1985 movie Enemy Mine.

Starbuck and the Cyclon kinda become friends and stuff, really good.

My faded memory of the original BSG lead me to buying the first series expecting to see the Return of Starbuck episode. When I didn't see it I thought I had been mistaken.

So he really was left stranded on a planet :(.......so was he Adama's father?

edit: Google and Wikipedia inform me that the child was Dr.Zee

I saw the final episode recently on Bravo.
At the beginning of the episode they pick up a broadcast of an 'ancient' spacecraft. They investigated the apparent source of the signal and found a Basestar. Apollo and Starbuck go on a suicide mission to take out the Basestar's scanners. The Galactica takes on the crippled Basestar while the Vipers engage the Cylon fighters. The blinded Basestar is destroyed and the Galactica is heavily damaged. Unfortunately the lab which was analysing the broadcast recording gets destroyed in the attack. Apollo holds a vigil hoping to pick up another signal, Starbuck coaxes him away to join the victory party. Just after they leave the room a broadcast of the moon landing is received.
