I'd say it was probably La Vie Claire/Toshiba in the late eighties when Look brought out carbon frames. No doubt a few were raced before then by individual riders and rebadged with the bike sponsor's name.

Not sure who was the first but Kelly rode Vitus carbon fibre frames in the Skil-Sem team from 1984-86 . They were bonded carbon rather than monocoque though.

In 1982 they rode either Reynolds 531 steel frames or the durolinux aluminium frames (manafactured by Vitus badged as peugeot's)

Back in 1989 a friend of mine was racing (cat 1) with a carbon frame (think it was a Vitus frame). Now that was far out at that stage as I was riding an Olmo with Reynolds 531 tubing! and Campag Chorus. By the way all chainsets were 52/42 with a 21 or 23 block! Real macho men in those days:eek:

    I now ride a compact with a 27 block. :(

I'm reading "In Search of Robert Millar" at the moment and there is a reference of Millar, riding for Peugeot, freaking out at the mechanics before one of the mountain stages in the 1983 tour because they didn't have his carbon fibre bike prepared for him.

In the 80's it was fairly standard for bikes to be custom built and then rebadged as team ones. So a Peugeot carbon fibre would have been a sprayed vitus 979 (I think). The 7-11 True-temper labeled frames were made by Serotta and even today the "scott" tt bikes that Colimbia use look suspiciously like the Giants form last year !
