Qualifying for Rent Allowance

Me and my girlfriend are currently looking to get rent allowance to move into an apartment that is ready to go (moving from a council house where we lived with my family). The Social Welfare Officer gave us the forms to be filled out and told us we had to get the County Council to sign and stamp one part of one of the forms.

We were told we had to apply to get on the housing list before they would stamp it. We went down last week to get it stamped but we needed the landlord to fill out his part first, and were told that they would stamp in the negative due to our situation.

Now, my question is if they stamp in the negative will that completely eliminate us from getting the Rent Allowance at all? Or is simply applying for the housing list enough for us to qualify? The Social Welfare Officer didn't specify but it seemed as if we only had to get it stamped one way or another whether we were put on the housing list or not.

I think the guys over in the State Benefits forum might be able to shed some light on this. I'm going to leave a link in Accommodation & Property and move your thread over there.

    Kind regards,

All information is available on www.citizensinformation.ie
You generally need to be assessed by the council as having a housing need and be on a council housing list to qualify for rent supplement.
