I'm just wondering, what is an Artist Development Deal?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 801 ✭✭✭PMI

It can be used in a few ways....

You find an artist and you fund and work with them to build their image, songs, writing, websites, fan base and sale ablility and then aim to move them on to management or record company. if you are lucky enough to succeed you can/will recoup your money with possibly a clause in their contract retaining a small %age of their earnings for life.

I know a few guys in UK that have done this will a few majors but in UK there are alot more independent labels willing to take risks.

    Clothing? ;)

How much would you expect to spend on an artist? I've been involved in a couple of development deals, I'd rather back a horse.

Mind you back in the days when record companies used to do them it was great for business.

Hi yeah I know its kinda old school but I think I would be up for a try.....

I would like to see how far 10k would go to start with, recording is free, mixing free, mastering cheapish in states..... so not alot of dosh spent there.

Websites, photographers, video etc... I have the contacts but the main prob is where to try and move to in Ireland?!?

The likes of Tug and Concept in the Uk are record companies that take chances if you have 80% of the work done but ideally my idea will fill a hole in the irish market to start with.

Should I drop more and go for a full release myself :( seems easier but then its a PR problem?

Ah right. Its a risk alright, I don't think I'd go for it. You need a lot of capital I'd say.

A friend at MGM says that they pretty much only pick acts up that have done all the legwork and are set up... I'm doing the same sort of thing with a pop/rock act in the UK, my first attempt at it all, but the friend is helping with the marketing strategy a little ;)

Don't do it if you don't have contacts in the business already. And the artist should be truly brilliant. Trust your gut.

Luckily do know some good contacts, and already signed myself - so it makes finding info sooooo much easier.

Only hassle i had recently was trying to find a European agent for promotions, but have people i can pump - so it's definitely a case of 'who you know'

Is this not something the artists should be doing for themselves?
It's certainly something I wouldn't expect anyone else to do for me...

OK Sorry which part, the part about already having public exposure, already having more pull than the girl next door, already had studio experience, already been on TV so no anxiety attacks to deal or the bit where she sings songs supplied by myself/others and then able to push her to where she wants to be while we gracefully bow out.... :D

Yes bands and some (hey i want to be taken sooooo seriously) artists do this for themselves but im talking the likes of PSD's, aguilara, Leona Lewis, Britney, girl bubblegum pop.... ;)

None of the above is rare or unique. What's you USP?

Why will you succeed where most don't?

Has she a MySpace or similar where we can have a listen?

Hey, am new to the boards but was drawn to this thread. I have worked in Irish music industry (mainstream) for last 20 years, and would be very wary about this unless a) you have a lot of money behind you (and I mean at least 6 figure sum), b) you (or your investor) are prepared to lose this money, and c) have a lot of time to devote to it. You need to have the support (and goodwill) of major players in the industry to do this...from concert promoters, radio playlisters etc. Your songwriters and producers need to be top drawer, so you will be taken seriously. I have been down the road of managing, developing, selling and charting an Irish group...and its not easy....best of luck (and I mean that) with it...

Does anyone remember the programme on RTE a few years ago about a young lad who wanted to be a pop star? He had convinced a lot of people to invest their time and money in him.

He didn't appear to be that talented to me, nothing to merit the money being spent on him.

He was flown out to America to get singing lessons from Michael Jackson's singing teacher/voice coach.

He also recorded some of his songs in Abbey Road with a full orchestra as far as I recall (which he conducted). His backer put tens if not hundreds of thousands into him.

The guy failed to get past the preliminary stages of the Irish version of X Factor/Pop Stars.

Even talented people with massive backing need an awful lot of luck to make it in the music business.

I wish you all the best.

I remember the programme, the only "talent" the guy had was to hoodwink his backer into thinking he had musical talent.

If it's the same guy I'm thinking about, rumour was that he had attended a Tony Quinn seminar where they fill you with a psychotic belief that you're brilliant.
Actually around that time, I knew a few of the bigwigs in the biz who had each encountered the same guy. He had been a little more gung-ho than most people in his approach to selling himself to the labels here and in the UK.
A few people were freaked out. Wonder where he is now?
