OK, Not fully sure where to post this, so i thought why not just stick it in here.

Just looking for some foodback. Has anyone ever bought a laptop/computer from an ebay seller?

    I'm looking at this:

    http://cgi.ebay.ie/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=280316826039&fromMakeTrack=true#ebayphotohosting

(a friend of mine is just starting to learn about computers and wants something to practice on). The price seems good. Im aware it's refurbished, etc. but if it blows up in my face, where do i stand on getting a refund/replacement?

Do paypal care? If it crashes and dies three weeks after i get it, is there any hope of getting anything done?

He's a business seller, so you are fully protected by statutory rights. However, neither eBay nor Paypal will get that involved, and not at all after 45 days from the sale, so you may have a hard time enforcing your rights.

It's only 256M RAM too, so even XP is going to be sluggish on that. Have a look to see how much an extra 256 or 512M RAM would cost for it before buying, because you're more than likely going to want it.

Just saw there now, that he offers only a 30 day warranty. eBay will not offer anything beyond this, even though it contravenes your statutory rights.

In terms of buying computers on ebay, you should be fine. You'll be PayPal protected too so you can get your money back if the seller is dodgy, though you won't have to worry about that. The seller will look after you if any problems arise.

    All the best. :)

They will expect you to return the laptop at your expense, if it turns out to be a dodgy one. If you receive nothing at all, Paypal will only refund you if they can recover the funds from the sellers account. Nothing about this seller looks like he's a scammer though, so I wouldn't be worried about that in this case.

This particular seller, or sellers in general? I don't think you can make that kind of blanket statement in respect of all sellers on eBay, as there are plenty who wouldn't help the buyer, outside what the warranty in the sale states. In this case, it states 30 day warranty, so I'd imagine the seller wouldn't do much outside of that period.

Which is worth SFA. If you pay PayPal with your Credit Card then you have your credit card protection too. So if PayPal don't refund you because of a dodgy seller you can contact your credit card provider who will. It's happened to me twice. The first time they wouldn't refund anything (after I showed them that the tracking number the guy sent showed the item was returned to his site because he got my address wrong), the second time they'd only refund me about 33% of the amount because that's all the seller had in his account. On both occasions I contacted my bank and got the remaining money refunded in about a month.

Regarding the OP though. I've bought a PC and laptop from eBay sellers with no hassle. The most important thing is the feedback score. If you can see 20 or 30 laptops sold in the last month with good feedback then he's probably not a conman.
