Set-top boxes for Irish DTT?

I receive Mullaghanish for Analogue and want to now receive the DTT trials. I have been really holding my powder in terms of investment as I am not sure what to go for yet, in terms of a massive investment into my entertainment centre.

Basically all the talk here is centred around either integrated tuners in new Tv's or DVB-S (Satellite) and DVB-T (Terrestrial) Combo boxes.

I was in Germany last week and could have bought whatever I wanted in Saturn (Satun Hansa pronounciatation) but did not as I am not sure what is happening.

Ireland is using DVB-T with H.264/MPEG-4 AVC which is used in Norway, Poland, Hungary, New Zealand, Portugal and Brazil etc.

I have seen several satellite receivers which support MPEG4 but these appear to be High Defintion Satellite Receivers which will not pick up DTT due to the difference in frequency ranges between Satellite and Terrestrial receivers. Or at least this is what I think!

How can Televisions which receiver FREESAT such as certain Panasonic models receive DTT, are the frequency's the same as I cannot imagine using an F connector to connect my Aerial to a satellite port.

What I want really is to be able to buy a cheapo Scart DTT Receiver which supports the Irish standard and not a combo box etc. Are they even on the market? I only want this for the conclusion of the trials as I will be setting up a massive Home Cinema system towards the 2nd half of the year.

Anyone care to shed light on this?

Satellite uses a single carrier and Terrestirial 1700 to 6700 carriers per Transponder/Multiplex.

Even if the frequency was identical it wouldn't work. Satellites are 100W to 300W about 22,500 miles away with nothing between you and it. TV TX is 2mile to 30 miles and maybe 10,000W. Signal travels to you not far above ground influenced by buildings, trees, hills, water, marsh. Hence the very different transmission signals.

Some TV sets have UK freeview = terrestrial (DTT or DVB-t) MPEG2 tuners built in. Some have UK freesat = satellite (DSAT or DVB-s or DVB-s2) built in and some have both. The type of connector is not an issue either. In other countries they use the F-type used with satellite gear for TV aerials too. It's used in Ireland for cable.

    THERE ARE NO TRIALS!

The Politically based trial on East Coast ended ages ago. We now have engineering tests and not yet any consistent service.

Till RTE announce the service is live it's a waste on money buying a box as they will be cheaper.

Not Brazil, they are using the SBTVD standard (based on the Japanese standard ISDB-T) with MPEG-4 (H.264) video encoding.

I understand there are no trials, I badly worded that one, I would like to pick the tests in advance of they launching. Getting DTT would be great and I just want to know what would be a cheapish standard set top box to receive it. My plan so far seemed to be centred around getting one from a country where it is rolled out already as everything in the European market seems totally geared towards the MPEG2 standard that the UK uses.

Anyone know where to source a STB for DTT?

google "satellite tv " from ireland and you will see a link to a provider who sells terrestrial receivers for Ireland,,, thats as much as i can say as it is my site,,

[Mod Edit. 50% of the DTT models on offer from that site don't work with Ireland or the many other MPEG4 countries]

    Absolutely untrue.

About 16 countries are launching MPE4G and some converting from MPEG2 to MPEG4.

Germany, Netherlands and UK are of course established MPEG2 Market.

See the other threads for MPEG4 solutions.

    1) Actual MPEG4 DTT set-boxes, inc French payTV TNT HD boxes.
    2) TVs with built in DTT MPEG4
    3) Neotion CAM type module (The Pocket Duo offers record/play via ethernet) for many MPEG2 Digital TVs and DTT boxes that have a CI for payTV,
    3) USB TV tuner for PS3 (playTV)
    4) USB, expressCard, PCI card or PCMCIA card DTT tuners for PC/Laptop/Media centre (Most can retro fit MPEG4 by adding codec). Windows, Linux and OSX.
    5) A very few expensive Combo Sat/DTT MPEG4 set boxes.

    See the other threads.
