Just wondering has anyone used Cement/Concrete board for cladding an external wall. Is it easy to work with i.e. plastering, weatherproofing etc ?

From personal experience, its a top class exterior board but 8 x 4 sheets are very heavy - 2 man job to lift into place.
Cement can be difficult to cut in a perfectly crisp line - by handsaw or circular saw.
Easy to plaster and seal. Specialist companys are happy to spray plaster it - very fast and efficient.

Thanks for the quick reply RKQ. Would you recommend it for an exterior Cladding for a house extension. How is it fixed ?. Can it be plastered in the normal way ?.

Yes, its ideal for external use. Great for timber frame or dormers etc - IMO far superior to plywood. A number of leader timber frame manufacturers are now offering it as part of a "factory finished" wall with obvious advantages.

Screw fixed, see IAB cert. Stainless steel screws are worth considering for external use.

Why plaster the "normal" way. It could be easier, cheaper and quicker to spray plaster! One company claims to spray interior and exterior of average house in 3 days!

The new cladding needs to blend in with existing plastered wall, is this possible with spray plaster ?

Sorry, its too hard to say without seeing the wall.
Nothings impossible but it would depend on the position of the joint and the depth of existing plaster and neatness of cut edge of existing plaster etc.

    hi guys,

anyone have any idea of how much per sqm it would cost??
i got a quote from the closed panel timberframe company of
€18k to factory fit the battens & board and apply the acrilic render.

is this excessive? or would i be better doin this by a contractor
    when the house is up??

    thanks
    rob

In most cases factory fitted is way better than on site fitted: just clarify how th2 corners etc will be finished on site and how the acrylic finish will match up

You don't specify an area but given the price of the board and the acrylic I would say it is not excessive: I have an invoice somewhere for Cement board so will dig it out later

I got a quote for 360m2 of wall. This includes 50m2 of glazing but they always price through the openings.

The contractor on site price was 34k inc vat for the job. This didn't even include battening the frame, I had to have that ready in advance.

It may be a good system but I believe it's appallingly expensive.

Plus, several home insurance companies (e.g. hibernian) won't cover a timber frame house unless it has a masonry outer leaf. This needs to change but was the state of play when I looked into it in the last year.
