    Hey lads,
quick question regarding Insurance, I was just thinking about doing snag lists etc., only small ones to start with obviously, as Im not working, I think they might be a good way to make a few quid.
Just wondering though, following on from reading about the PI for BER, whats the story with snag lists?, would it be required? or roughly how much would I be looking at paying if it were?
Anyone who has done this before or is doing it, any other advice greatly welcome.

    Thanks

armchairninja, snag lists are very subjective. The purpose of them is to pick up items that deemed minor (or just snags), like small holes left after electricians fitted lights, touching up paintwork etc. All building items that are outstanding or building regulation items should be picked up by the supervising Agent. Therefore, if you clearly set out your position to the client before you take on the project, i don't feel you require a lot of PI protection. However, if this is going to lead onto broader involvement get PI.

There is an Insurance broker in Waterford that provide packages of PI cover to Architectural technicians.

So, if it was just for minor jobs, a properly worded disclaimer on the front of the report would be suitable you reckon?
I wouldnt have thought it was needed at all until i was reading the BER thread, similarly wouldnt have thought that BER certs needed it either, but its safer to have it and not need it etc., especially if its cheap enough

If you, or anyone for that matter, have the contact info for that broker, could you PM it to me? thanks

If you think about it the snag list will not form part of the sale of the house in the future unlike, compliance and BER certs. I will always provide my client with a provisional copy of the snag list before I issue it to the contractor. This way I will ask them are they satisfied with all the items covered? If in doubt, get P.I.

I will PM you the insurers details.

A few years ago it was coming up to my renewal date and the office secretary was on maternity leave, the girl who replaced her was and still is a very good friend of mine, and asked me would she check around for quotes. After two days she came back to me with a premium figure which was €1,150 less then my renewal quote, needles to say she got a bonus.

Anyway I am currently covered by a company in Leitrim.

Cheers for them numbers lads, havnt gotten around to ringing yet, but I will.

Meant to ask the other day also, but I presume, that as an Arch. Tech., with PI, I'd be legally allowed to carry out a property survey on a second hand property, just a visual one obviously, no opening up etc.? Just commenting on things like lack of roofing insulation, flat roofing condition etc. etc.
Just I recall, seeing a report that was done for a property my parents were selling a few years back, and tbh, it read like it was done by a complete cowboy, who contradicted himself every couple of paragraphs etc., and thought to myself, surely I can do this and make a better job of it.

    Thanks

No problem. Just make sure that you note it properly on your PI application to ensure that the insurance company is aware of the services that you are providing.

This is something I meant to check on my own policy and never got round to it. There was a mention (I think) regarding structural surveys and if I can get the time to read through it again I'll post up anything that is out of the way.

As stated above make sure this is included in your proposal form.
