500 Hewlett Packard jobs for Leixlip

Hewlett Packard is to create 500 jobs at its base in Leixlip, Co Kildare.
The jobs will be announced with the establishment of a global services desk.
The firm already employs around 4,000 people in Ireland at its bases in Dublin, Leixlip, Galway and Belfast.

The multi-lingual technical support centre will employ a range of people, including high-end graduates, and an element of the operation will also involve research and development.
300 jobs are to be brought on line immediately.
The new support service will deal with HP customers in 16 European languages.
The company says it decided to base the jobs in Ireland because of its access to a highly-skilled and talented labour pool.
However, some of its current staff have been affected by cuts with many taking leave in a bid to cut costs.
When was the last time we have a bit of good news eh?

    500 down - 300,000 to go.

I knew that I was doing the right thing when I bought an HP laptop. It's ironic that it replaced a sh1t Dell one that I dismantled with a lump hammer.

I did, and then I thought the God patrol were let in to After Hours again.

It is good news though... Lets hope it starts a trend.

There is a shortage it seems of English speakers with another language and an IT qualification in this country at the moment.

Creating these jobs might look good but there are few people qualified to actually do them.

It appears they're hiring people to do my old job. Probably for less money. Meh.

Theres no doubt HP are at the top scale of quality laptops if not pcs. Good to see some more highly skilled jobs coming into the country.

HP do quality products but calling their support line is a horrible experience. Its based in India.

As is Dells support centre. I wouldn't rate their products as high quality anyway.

They are better laptops out there IMO. I know a few people with HP laptops and they have all had hardware problems with them although I wouldn't rule out user error with the odd knock of something they shouldn't have.

Good news if you're one of the people being made reduntant in Intel so, the staff hop back and forth between those two companies.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 13,992 ✭✭✭✭gurramok

So they cut a couple of hundred postions recently and have implemented a 2.5%-5% paycut so net gain of 300 new jobs, hopefully more.

I did buy a HP printer recently so doing my bit :)

Intel are going to start hiring too. The cuts appear to have been elimination of dead weight from both plants.

A guy I know used to work in Intel, said they do it every year and I'm guessing it is only making headlines because of the recession thing and scaremongering by the press that they were going to pull out completely or something makes for good headlines.

Looks like the queues in the canteen are going to get longer, and a hell of a lot less parking spots.

Wow. A relative of mine works in that HP and as far as I know, her department is to be outsourced at some point of the next year.
