    does anyone here know anything about DHL fedex and the likes, I am planning to start importing on a small scale into ireland and maybe start a stall or ebay or web site.....

    1. I was wondering if i get my goods sent from asia about 130 in a box at €2 each so say a value of about 260 a box. Will DHL or whomever just send it on and send me the duty and inport tax bill. this has happened to me before.

    2. Will they do it for every parcel or will some slip through the net and i dont have to pay

    3. Will they pass this information onto the revenue to say you brought the stuff in that way you might be caught for tax in the future if that makes sense

    4. Is there any reliable way to post stuff and not get hit for all that customs carry on.

    okay thanks for any help paddy

    paying customs duty is just a fact you have to deal with..its not that much usually. You will also have to pay VAT but assuming u are registered for VAT you can claim it all back.

    I use to ship stuff from asia to dublin...i used an asian shipping compny who would ship it to dublin for th attention of a customs clearence agent here..they will calculate how much vat/duty you owe, pay it and in turn you would pay this figure to them plus a fee for the service. They would then issue you with a clearance docket which you would present at the warehouse where the goods would be released to you..

    Hello Paddyc,

    Not sure if you are still looking for input.

    However, in answer to your questions ;

    1) In most cases you are likely to be asked to pay Duty and VAT on delivery of your shipment
    2) In principle all shipments have to be cleared through customs. It depends on the value and description on the documentation accompanying the shipment
    3) Once an entry has been filed there is an official record with Customs.
    4) All shipments are entered to Customs, regardless of the means of transport, including postage.

    I would strongly advise not to miss declare the values or descriptions. You may get away with one or two shipments but if Customs raise a concern you may have all your shipments inspected. They also have the right to go back over previous consignments and check all your records to ascertain if goods have been properly declared and duty/VAT properly charged.

    As peppy007 indicated, if you are registered for VAT you can claim back the VAT paid on imports (only VAT, not the duty).

    Would suggest to play by the rules. If you need any assistance, for instance in classifying the goods to ascertain the correct rate of duty, send me a PM and a description of the goods.

    Regards,
