Help for a Beginner

I am new to shooting / Hunting, I was out stalking with a friend a few times before the season ended and utlimately want to get a deer licence and a suitable caliber rifle. Should I get a small caliber rifle .22 for a start just to get my first gun licence and for learning to shoot with cheaper ammunition or go straight to the rifle suitable for deer.

With the current Depression I am on a very tight budget so where is the best place to get a good second hand rifle, I've looked on Irish guntrader and here and also guntrader.co.uk (where prices are considerably cheaper) and bearing in mind my goal of deer hunting should I get a centerfire or rimfire .22 or go slightly bigger and get a .223

    All help greatly appreciated!!!

Without a doubt you should get a .22lr first, then you can learn cheaply how to use a rifle and develop your fieldcraft skills stalking rabbits.

A second hand Brno/Cz should cost very little, maybe 200 including scope.

I'd go for a bolt action rather than a semi-auto.

Thanks fathersymes Thats what I was thinking any ideas of where to find such a second hand gun, Current Irish prices seem to be about 4 times that from what I can find?

I'd call a few dealers, or drop into a few and see what they have, I'm sure there will be plenty of cheap second hand .22's around.

    Where are you based?

I'm in Mayo, theres a dealer in Castlebar I'm going to call into him today hopefully if I can get a bit of work finished first

I find Trapper John in Tulsk very good, Peter McGee in Newport could have some .22's but he mainly deals in shotguns.

    Best of luck!

I've spent the last two days trawling around gun shops in the west, the lowest 2nd hand was about 260 with no scope or mounts or moderator and looked like it had seen much better days, saw a really nice .22lr with mod and mounts but no scope for 300 and a few really nice .22 magnums for around 450 with scopes no moderators!! and nearly every shop I went into showed me the newest & nicest gun first!!! So what should I get the .22lr or the .22 magnum. bearing in mind I want to move up to a deer calibre later in then year?

You're really not going to get anything worth while for around €200 with a scope, that hasn't been used as a hurley. You would need to be pushing €400 at least for something with a scope and definatly €600 for something with a decent scope and a rifle which can shoot well.
Sorry to be the bearer of such bad news :(

go for a 22 magnum. great for bunny shooting also expect to pay between 400-500 euro for good s/h with scope. again trapper john has a good selection but can be a bit pricey.
