Has anybody installed this in their house? If so, how efficient is it?. I am currently researching energy saving options as I expect to be building in the next year or so. I have heard some bad reports saying geothermal runs up huge ESB bills. Any feedback would be appreciated. Thanks.

there have been many many threads on this issue previously.

    check here for some:

and use the 'search' function for more.

as regards your questions, its all relative

    the efficiency depends on

    1. the make and model
    2. the insulation standard of the dwelling
    3. the air tightness standard of the dwelling
    4. the ground and site conditions
    5. other factors

putting an expensive heating system into a house thats leaks air like a sieve and is only minimally insulated will always be inefficient.

I have a geothermal heat pump. We are very happy with it and find it very efficient. PM for details after reading the other threads.

I'd agree with Syds points above - as it depends on your insulation levels, airthightness and to some extent your habits.

I have recently been called to a house that has a geothermal system installed.I am an electrician. They have been recieving electricity bills in excess of 1000 euro.having checked the wiring of the house to be sound ,I am in the process of monitoring the amount of electricity that the heat pump is using. So far its not good. The pump is rated at 50 amps,an average house has a 63 amp fuse in its fuseboard that leaves 13 amps to spare when the pump is starting up,boiling a kettle or having a shower could blow the main fuse.In this particular house the customer has a 3 phase supply installed which overcomes this problem. But a lot of power being used even on a nightsaver scheme. My advice is to install a woodburning stove as a back up in the event of power failure or poverty . hope this helps :D
