Howth - City Centre: Bus or Car.

This is for those who work in the city and commute into work in the morning in the car who use the howth road. Question why do you use the car when the 130 bus has its own bus lane?. The bus flies by every morning when I cycle from town into clontarf. Every morning I cycle, there are the same number of cars, one per car, stuck in traffic and the bus goes by. Studies have shown that to get from Howth to Fairview in a bus is 10 minutes whereas its 20 minutes in a car. So why do people want to be stuck in car every morning and not use the bus?. Think its the old irish thing about complaining about the lack of public transport, having a car & moaning about being stuck.

For a start not everyone is going to be driving to or from where the bus stops. It's not as convient as the car if you have bags / kids etc. Not as flexible, you dont' have to wait 20 minutes for your car to turn up in the morning:D

And under your logic why not just take the Dart from Howth to the CC, it'll be quicker still than the bus:p

That's debatable. For several comparable journeys in Dublin, the bus is more frequent and faster than the Dart.

Interesting thread. However, I'm a little confused OP. When you say the 'Howth Road' is that the road from Howth to the city along the coast ie Dublin Road->Howth Road->James Larkin Road->Clontarf Road? http://maps.google.com/maps?q=map+Dublin+coast+road&oe=utf-8&client=firefox-a&ie=UTF8&split=0&gl=ie&ei=G1y2SeTTE4zIjAfq1vGnCQ&ll=53.374368,-6.159897&spn=0.028573,0.066261&z=14&iwloc=addr Also, the 130 bus doesn't go down the Howth Road or to Howth. It goes Clontarf -> City Centre AFAIK

The 31 and 31B are the Howth buses - they operate via the inland Howth Road (Raheny and Killester) and not the coast road.

The 130 starts at Clontarf Castle and operates via the Clontarf estates to come out at Mount Prospect Avenue before then operating to the city via the coast road.

The 32X is the only service that operates along the entire coast road and is a limited service from Malahide/Portmarnock to the city and UCD.

True but whatever way you look at its quicker to either use the bus with its own bus route or get the dart so I would just love to know why people insist on using the car, being stuck in traffic, moaning about the lack of public transport while either the bus flies by or the dart goes quicker then both the car and bus every single day. They must be blind, stupid or both when they are stuck in traffic and they see the bus flying by.

I cycle that route too and live in howth and know that at rush hour the 31/31B can take over an hour.

That coupled with the fact that the DART is quite infrequent at times and the fact it only is useful for areas within walking distances of dart stations (and much of howth isn't), is why people take their cars, or cycle like I do.

I used to live in Raheny and commute to Sandyford.

Using public transport it was a minimum of 1.5 hours each way. Sometimes up to 2.5 hours one way (more often than not). And this was tested using all combinations of Dart, Luas, and bus.

Driving allowed me to get to work in about 40 minutes and the same coming home - generally using back roads.

    Self explanatory I'd say.

Also, the only body odor and attitude I had to put up with were my own.

I won't dispute that driving can be faster but I commute from slightly further out and can make it to Sandyford in 1h15 using bus and Luas.

I'm a huge fan of public transport and use it all the time (I don't even own a car) but I will happily admit that a lot of journeys are faster by car, even when public transport _should_ be good. The city centre is a huge problem - my commute is 13km (straight line) and I spent over 1/3 of my time between Connolly Station and Harcourt St. If you have a car, you might be stuck on the arteries but you don't have to go through the city centre so it probably balances out overall.
