[/QUOTE I used a hedge-cutting contractor that tried to charge me from the time he left his yard to the time he got back to his own yard. I reluctantly ended up paying him from the time he left his yard to completing the work. I told him that going back home was his problem and I sure wasn't going to pay him nearly €50/hour to get back home.

lads any hope of anyone contributing in a positive light to this thread, is it not a good idea to compare and contrast prices rather than say my contractors prices are too high, they are inclusive of VAT and he comes when he says he will, so as a part timer it is worth the extra for peace of mind!

Those prices seem fairly on the ball to me anyway. I presume the baling and wrapping price includes 4 layers of plastic?

Anyone putting less than 4 layers of plastic on your bale is just slobberin. Don't hire them!

    Hedgecutting 45 euro/hour

Slurry spreading 33-35 euro per hour

Any idea what this works out at without the plastic?

€90 for a roll of wrap. 30 bales per roll on average. €3 per bale for the wrap.
€3 to wrap a bale and €5 to bale it.

Personally I wrap about 3000 bales per year for neighbours + about 800 for myself. I charge €2 per bale for wrapping them. Brother in law does the baling for me and charges me €3 per bale. Thank god I don't have to pay any of those contractor charges.

Bought a new agitator this year with the tractor - now have 15 bays of slatted shed. New agitator will pay for itself in 3 years at these contractor prices.

Bought a hedgecutter 3 years ago for €4500. I have cut all my own hedges with it - about 100 hours over 3 years. - would have cost me €4500 in contractor charges. Still have a hedgecutter :)

Its no wonder people are buying their own machinery with these prices. Its argued that contractors are working on economies of scale so they can do things cheaper than the ordinary 5/8. Diesel prices have dropped 40% since last summer. I really don't see this reflected in charges.

I usually put on 6 layers of plastic for most customers. Works out an extra couple of euro per bale but there's a big difference in silage quality, especially if it's kept for a second winter.

Why do farmers always think the worst of contractors??

I believe farmers put absolutely no value on their time when they compare the cost of getting work done to doing it themselves.
Rellig you have also forgot to factor diesel costings into the equation when doing your own work and if your agitating 15 bays you'll use a sup!!
Can I ask you carried the burden of the high diesel price last summer, it certainly wasn't the supplier or the farmer.

My baling and hedge cutting contractors increased their rates last year for higher diesel prices. They kept the rates up until the end of the year even though diesel dropped in price so they wouldn't put out farmers that were charged the higher rate. I certainly know who carried the burden of the high diesel price last summer.
