CRT Television picture bending/warping

I know I know, someone that still has a CRT Telly:eek::p

Fact is I'm skint and it's all I got. So I'm watching telly last night and all of a sudden the picture kinda warps and bends a bit and there's kind of ripples running up and down it

I did a quick search there and google tells me that something like this happens if you put a magnet near it and it's permanently broke from then on.

I found this video here :

The warping isn't actually like that, it's not as extreme but it's definitely noticeable and it's kind of from the sides. Now, the question is... have I had magnets near it ? Well , yes, sort of. I often play guitar with the telly on and I'm in a box room. I've done so for years and never had a problems. Then last night I plugged in a Stratocaster which has "single coil pickups" and are susceptible to "60 cycle hum".

So can I assume that it was the Stratocaster guitar that's broke the telly ? Much point in getting it fixed ? Will it get worse ? I turned the telly off last night actually and when I stuck it on there again it was wobbling but it seems to have righted itself now:confused:.

    Thanks for any help.

I doubt that your Strat is the source of the problem - possible, but unlikely. A more plausible explanation is some technical fault in the CRT tube or one of the amplifiers driving it. If it persists you could get it checked out to see if it can be fixed, some older tv's have controls on the back for adjusting horizontal and vetrical hold, you could check and see if that would help.

CRT tvs are becoming rarer - I had a 28" widescreen CRT up until late last year and passed it on to friends for a playroom - if you do need a replacement you could keep an eye on the Electronics section of Adverts.ie, Boards sister site for buying and selling stuff, they come up from time to time for comparatively little money.

The telly died. It had started with the whistling noise a few months ago, then the warping, then there was some sound distortion then a few nights ago it switched itself off and made some horrible noise - and the standby button wasn't on. I turned it off and unplugged it, waited 20mins , turned it back on, standby light came up but wouldn't turn on.

Left it for a day and still nothing.
