DVB-T for the house - one or more cables?

I'm quite the newbie with DVB-T so please excuse my questions if they are silly.

I just got a DVB-T card for my htpc and need to run some cables from outside to it. Is it the same to run one cable from an aerial and split it so as one goes to htpc and another to some other freeview box or whatever, or do aerials allow for multiple connections from it and it would be better to have direct connections to each receiver? Are splits allowed at all?

    Thanks

You can do both run one cable and split it.

    or

You can just run the aerial cable to your DTT/Combo box and use the loop out to your htpc.

Its not like satellite, same as analogue, once you have a dvb-t tuner to run the cable to.

I notice that you say you are in Dublin. "Freeview" branded boxes do not work in Dublin. They will only pick up UK DTT and only in border areas. They are not compatiable with Irish DTT.

I presume you have an MPEG4 codec (such as CoreAVC) on your PC to decode the Irish DTT broadcasts.

Thanks STB. I meant Irish DTT rather than UK Freeview. I don't know what channels or if I'll pick up the signal from Three Rock but worth a try.

I'll be using Vista Windows Media Center with the TV Pack which as far as I know works with dvb-t, and there some DLL hack to get it work with H.264. Won't know for sure till I try. I'm in no rush for the dvb-t channels really until its complete (I don't even know the channel list yet) but I'm running cables from my satellite this weekend so I thought I'd run something for Irish DTT too.

I don't think Vista MC will record from mp4 though which is a big pity. I could be wrong though.

If splitting from say one ariel to 3 TV points, what's the best way to do this? Get some sort of box with 1 input and 3 (or more) outputs and connect using f-connectors, or connect all 3 lines up directly to the ariel?

If using a box, where best to place the box? A certain distance from the ariel?

If going with a box, is there any specification that should be sought/avoided?

When would some sort of powered splitter/amplifier be required? Only when signal needs to be boosted, or may it be required if the ariel is to supply several TVs?

Will the various permutations above likely work for both analogue and digital? Or will there be issues, for example, when splitting to 3 connections from 1 ariel solely for DTT in the future?

(Sorry for hijacking the thread, but kinda related to your post title).
