You've 25,000 euro max (that includes selling one of the kids) to buy a convertible what would it be...?
The more budget friendly the better!

I know someone with a rarer 03 Tuscan S that could sell for less!

IMO yep they are that good, I love that shape one but will agree the new one is just amazing as well...
have driven that model SL280... very very nice and have had the extreme pleasure of driving the new shape SL55AMG..... lets just say it is intoxicating...
you have to remember the price these cars sell for new, even with massive depreciation they still are expensive.... these where, Merc's top of the line, the crowning glory of their line up.....
and very very desirable, they depreciate like hell to a point and then seem to nearly level out...

One of these if you want a very fast car with superb handling.

    http://www.pistonheads.co.uk/sales/918605.htm

If you are after more comfort and refinement I also like these.

    http://www.pistonheads.co.uk/sales/629185.htm

Either could be had for well within your budget.

If you had more to spend the Z4M would be a rocket but the VRT is crazy on them.

http://www.pistonheads.co.uk/sales/868289.htm, 25k euro to vrt this!!!!

Spend €3k on this, have as much fun and pay the other €22k off your mortgage:

    ^^ It's gotta be that blue M3.

    I'd be looking at a 2 litre MX-5.
Best rear wheel drive chassis going and plenty of fun without risking your licence too much.

Was thinking of an Elise, but don't think I could live with it as a daily driver. For weekend fun, then there's a caterham or morgan

Edit - linked to a different morgan after actually reading the price of the first one.

Fair enough, but not exactly practical.
Also, I think the one I drove understeered more than an MX-5 on the limit. Could have just been the one i drove.

I know people who drive Elises as a daily driver, they also have sh!tbox's to drive around when they need more space but generally the Elise holds up well.

As for mortgage - pah !

Nah, buy one of these with the change, go on a tour of Europe, relax.......and still have 5 grand left over.

If it's your first convertible why not go with something cheaper to see if you like it first, see sig!
If I had my choice it'd either be the M3, the boxter or a Saab Viggen.

How about an E36 M3 like this one or this one?

I was going to suggest a C70 actually (was thinking of getting one myself last year), but some people have said they are a really awful drive. Shame, because it's a really nice looking car in its own right, as opposed to "for a volvo".

I have to say, I have been very pleased with my S4 droptop. I figure it'll be worth about E25k these days (it's a 2005)

If you're buying a convertible and not a hard-top, you're deliberately sacrificing speed for the sheer joy of driving. The interior of the Audi, combined with the solidity, ride, noise of the V8, gearshift... I've rarely felt as good about life as I have driving this thing with the top down through the mountains on a summer's day.

    s42.JPG

Also, as a four-seater with an admirably sized boot, also has some practical utility.

I should say, also, that I deliberately chose it over the M3 as I felt the Audi's interior was nicer and it just seemed far more 'civilised' a car. Again, if you're going for the convertible, you're looking for comfort and class more than anything else. AWD didn't hurt in the snow either.

Remember, it's personal opinion. I wouldn't turn down an elise if it came by at the right money.

As for practicality, Bigger boot, Easier roof design and its not so low that its a pain to get in and out over the sill. Thats just what would turn me off using it everyday as opposed to an MX-5.

Fair enough. Boot space wise the later Elise which you would get for 25,000 has 115 Litres of space compared to the mx5's 150 litres.

Roof wise your right too. It takes about 30 seconds to take off and about 1-2 mins tops to put on.

And yes people do have problems getting over the sill but if you own it youll have it more then mastered with ease in a week and its always amusing watching others get out hehe :D

I do understand what your saying i just think they are all tiny things to live with compared to how amazing this car is to drive. I dont understand how anyone could choose anything else over it in that price bracket if they were really into cars and the perfect drive :)

    It definitly would ;)

But the elise is still an amazing car and i sold mine for close to the 27,000 and that was a good few months ago. Perfect condition. Ok i am biased but it funny how many people who step in one at mondello and get out wanting one more then anything in the world :D

...you're missing the point - you can have a '5 for 3k. And it doesn't matter how good the Elise is (and yes, I've driven one..), the '5 trounces it for value and reliability.

Fair enough but i would assume due to the budget the mx5 suggested was the newer version. I cant argue with 3k but thats like arguing a focus against an m3 in my opinion :)

I would definitly argue on reliability. But again its just my opinion and also 4 years experiance where only 2 things have ever gone wrong and that was a flat tyre and a blown fuse.

The noise. I prefer a V8's rumble over a screaming, raucus noise. Personal choice.
