I'm in Dundalk, Co.Louth and I'm wondering if anyone in the town and surrounding areas can pick up UK Freeview, if so what equipment are you using ?

I was thinking of giving it a try but just wanted to check out if it was worth trying.

    Thanks in advance :)

Depends where you are. For sure on the Castletown road you can receive all the UK digital channels, where I am near the DKIT I can detect 3 of the muxes but none of them are of sufficient quality to give a stable picture.
If you are to have any hope you will need a very high gain antenna and mast head amplifier.

I'm out by Fatima, I have a digital 48 element high gain aerial that I was going to try in my attic if that can be done, what dB of amplifier should I get and what direction do I need to point the aerial ?

This is the aerial I have:

Reception in this area is such that there is no way to know in advance what your reception will be like, but having the antenna in the attic definitely won't do. The mast head amps are fairly standard and would be carried by local installers. I think your best bet is to call in a pro installer and see what they suggest.

    Hi Hellboy

I'm in the Avondale Park and on my TM 6900 HD combo when I do the Terrestial scan I just get Clermont Cairn. Signal strentght goes to 20% on a couple of other frequencies which I take to be the BBC's but no channels scan. I had terrible reception on the analogue BBC etc eventhough my aerial is up higher than my neighbours. Installer said it is just the corner I'm in. A guy I know in Belfry can get Freeview but with intermittent signal loss.

If you have the possiblity to put up a dish get a FTA box you will get nearly everything on Freeview plus much more.

I already did call a few and have got different answers from yes, no to I don't know.

I have Sky already and FTA running off the dish.

Think I'll not bother now, sounds like a lot of hassle, just wanted to see if I could get Freeview as I have the aerial and a freeview box. Thanks guys :)

Not in Athlone. You need a Satellite Dish and receiver. Virtually all the same channels and some others, free. From about €70 DIY install or less than €290 professionally installed. No subscription.

    Three satellite options:
    1) Get Sky and cancel after a year. As box and Install is subsidized and you own the gear it's not a bad deal. Very easy to use.

    2) Buy a Freesat system. Again very simple to use.

    3) Buy a FTA system. Cheapest option. Best for foriegn satellite or Motorised dish. No Weekly program guide.

A PVR is highly recommended, but some don't have dual tuners which means you can't record a different channel to the one watched. Sky+, while a good PVR, does not play or record without a subscription.

Some channels are in Free HD on Satellite. Not on Terrestrial.

Ireland's channels are Pay Only on Satellite, but the free terrestrial Digital service will start this year. Eventually it will add some extra Local channels. So a TV aerial and Dish is a good option.

But Athlone is far to far to N.I. for freeview unless you have a massive mast (90ft) on highish ground (none of that at Athlone?) with an array of about 8 aerials on it.

Probably have to wait until the UK analogue switch off and the consequent increase in DTT power from Divis/ Brougher Mountain.
