I need to teach myself statements of cash flow, earnings per share and group accounts (consolidation). I was in the bookshop today looking at the different books but was unsure of which one to get.

    Any recommendations much appreciated!

I recommend that you check out Amazon for the books.

See if there is any PODCASTS that might be able to help you.

Are you looking for information on how to prepare them or how to understand them when reading them.

i think i used Elliott & Elliott & BPP study guides for these when in college cause my lecturer was crap. If theres library near you, see if they have any accountancy books cause the books are expensive to buy and there are loads out there.

Are you attending classes/home study? if so look at the recommended texts or ask a tutor what they recommend.

Attending college - crap lecturer/scheduling nightmare...

Might check out the elliot and elliot book. Was recommended Kaplan - Financial Reporting... has anyone used that?

The Kaplan book is basically an ACCA course book, and thus follows the ACCA syllabus for the Financial Reporting course very closely.

The Elliott & Elliott book is comprehensive, but I understand that a lot of people find it difficult, particularly for private study, because some topics are not very well explained. Also, the book is updated annually, but some chapters still have material that is a bit dated as well as the more recent accounting standards.

The main competitor to Elliott & Elliott is probably Alexander, Britton & Jorissen International Financial Reporting and Analysis. A lower level book is Pauline Weetman Financial and Management Accounting: An Introduction, but I don't think it goes very far into group accounts.

The general advice if you don't need a book that covers all the latest accounting standards is to get a second-hand copy of an older edition rather than spending vast sums on the latest edition.

What about the Ciaran Connelly book - International Financial Accounting and Reporting? It's the ICAI CAP 1 and 2 book. I used it in college and am again using it now.

    Pretty good imo.

Yes, Ciaran Connolly's book is very thorough. It can be ordered through ICAI:

The current edition is, I believe, the one dated 2006 and published in early 2007, so there are probably some second-hand copies available by now.

I bought a book recommended on the module descriptor and that got a good review on amazon. Seems good this far and follows the course I'm doing! It's by Woods and Sangster.

    Thanks for all your help!

Frank Wood's Business Accounting is one of the bestselling accounting textbooks - it's currently edited by Alan Sangster (Frank Wood died a few years ago), and is I think in its 11th edition. One drawback is that some of the end of chapter questions don't have answers available - this was raised on another thread - see link. However, a lot of people who are studying accounting by themselves use the book.
