Connecting External Hard drive to PS3

I have spent the last several days researching how to do this and I have finally figured out how.

I don't know if this qualifies as a sticky or what.

    Here it is.

    1. You will have to format your hard drive to fat 32. You can use a program called swiss knife or Seagate disc wizard, to find these use Google.
When asked if you want to format to primary or logical click primary.

Note: remember reformatting a hard drive will erase all data on the HD so back it up first.

    2. All updates for you ps3 must be applied. Just connect PS3 to the INTERNET and it will do it automatically.

    3. Plug in your newly reformatted hard drive into your PS3 hard drive. (Through USB)
It should appear as a portable device under video, pictures and music menus.

The one final trick to this is when selecting the portable dives press triangle and then select display all. Otherwise it wouldn't show anything.

There are still a few problems with this setup.

    It doesn't play everything.
I have had varying success with .MKV files but for the most part they play fine.
Other then that most files play but not all I would say it is in the region of 90% play the rest don't. Can't put my finger on which files don't work but they are in the minority. When you have a similar set up on an xbox360 the files that don't work on your ps3 work on the 360. Although the 360 can't play .mp4 which the ps3 can.

Music files protected by license will not work either.

Also subtitles (if you have them in a separate file say .srt or .txt) do not work. I am afraid you will have to use other means. Try Streaming through TVersity.

If any one would like to try this with a ps2 please do and get back to me.

    Good luck with this.

P.S Any size hard drive works. I currently Have two 1TB hard drives connected to it and it works.
