The auto correct is not working, it is not correcting obviously incorrectly spelt words. I have checked tools, options, spelling and all the necessary things seem to be ticked, anyone have any ideas?

Do you have MS Word installed? Sometimes the lack of MS Word means a lack of a dictionary.

Yes, word is installed, it was working before but just seems to have decided to stop.

Just noticed it works okay when I click on New and then mail message but doesn't work if I just click on the new tab at the top of the screen v. odd....
