How much do the Irish spend on alcohol?

I can't for the life of me find this statistic. Surely the government must know how much tax revenue is coming from alcohol. I can find statistics to say how many litres a year we're buying, but not the amount spent or the revenue made.

Can anyone help me out here?

Interesting link, still only shows litres. Not sure if I can calculate that properly from the excise duty/vat rates. Thanks though

I remember reading an article in the Irish Times, back around 1992, that reported that tobacco and alcohol taxes accounted for 36% of government revenues. I expect we are going back to that model again.

'All four alcohol drinks categories suffered volume declines with cider down 11 per cent, spirits down 7.7 per cent, beer down 5 per cent and wine down 4.1 per cent. As a result, the value of the alcohol market overall fell by 2.5 per cent to €6.9 billion last year.'

This story is in the Irish Times today should help you as it quotes a report on this very area.

Yup, in the pre-Celtic Tiger basketcase economy we used to have, which is a bit like the post-Celtic Tiger basketcase economy we now have...
