I've seen a few signs at counters around the place that say they don't take "American Express".
    Why don't they?
I'm organising an irish holiday for some American's and I suppose i should warn them.

Most Card schemes (Visa/Mastercard) change a fee (~1%) for processing the trasnaction, AmEx charge a lot more, so a lot of merchants (RyanAir for example) do not take it.

Even in America, American Express is not a common card and they have the same problem with places not accepting it, so most will have another card.

Most Americans would be aware that Amex cards are not widely accepted in Europe.

Oh yes, we are aware! :)

AmEx has got really poor exchange rates and charges some 2.75% "foreign currency conversion fee" on top of that.
