prob with headphones port

Hi all, Can anyone help me please? I have a Toshiba Equium and it seems to be running ok, the problem I have is when I plug speakers in to the headphones port they're being recognised as a microphone, I've tested the speakers with my mp3 and my tv and they're working fine, any ideas? Cheers
