    half 3 our time

If it's a fast race, then I can see Cullen taking silver. If it's a slow race with a fast kick at the end, then it could be a different story. Best of luck to her anyway - it would work wonders for her confidence in the summer, and after becoming tantalisingly close to a medal in Brussels, she deserves it this time around.

3.30 Irish time I believe. Edit: Once again I'm too slow to the mark :)

Yes, they've been running pretty much to schedule over the past two days anyway.

I going to go for silver in another Irish record of 8:39.

Maybe be Deirdre Byrne will take it out for her like Draper did for Farah!!!!!

    Bronze.

Delighted for her. Really gutsy race from her, taking the initiative and pushing the pace.Seemed a very physical race and she appeared to take a few knocks.......wonder how much that took out of her?

phew. I was worried she was going to get another 4th place finish there. She looked happy at the finish. I'm glad she has something to show for a good run and great season to date

Moreira suprised me. I thought it was Augusto passing Cullen on the straight. Alminova died completly over the last lap.

    Well done to Mary Cullen.

Well done Mary - great race! She showed determination, grit, a good racing brain and oodles of confidence.

I'm still shaking a little (sad I know!) and am just over the moon for her.

When she nearly fell, I was distraught - not another Irish on the floor!

I really think she's going to run some great 5000m times this summer - she just needs Sonia to give her some specific training for a kick!

    Brilliant - absolutely brilliant.

    Séamus

Delighted, well done Mary. If she had fallen on the Gillick Bend it would have been too much. What a battler.

Just the relay team left. Andrews and Furlong on first and 2nd.

    Wow...we're in 3rd after 2 legs

We came 4th!!! We nearly had Belarus for 3rd! If only we had Shinkins. Ah no, fair play to the 4 ladies for a great performance!

Who took the 3rd and 4th legs? McMahon and Zeebo?
    Well done Mary btw!!!!:D

Great run by the 4x4, those girls justified their selection with that. Only 2 seconds off the NR that was set by a team of 4 Olympians so great stuff.

Great race by Mary, race didn't seem to fall in her favour at all but she made the brave decisions, got her medal, and ran 8:48 while she was at it. Top class.

Great run by all the girls today especially Mary capping off a great season with a hard fought race. I also thought that Brona Furlong had an excellent run over the second leg!!

Is it just me or were the stats on RTE worse than usual for the champs?! First of all we herd that CHRISTINE (Josephine) Onyia pulled out of the hurdles!! Then Gillick won his heat in 48.10. (47.10). On the news last night Dwain chambers was apparently the defending champion (Didn't even run). Just on the news there now i think we were told that Mary Cullen ran the final 5 seconds slower than yesterday (nearly 7 seconds faster!)!! I also remember them telling us that Deirdre Ryan jumped a N.R. of 1.94 (1.93) earlier in the season!!

Not very suprising with Jerry Kiernan probably feeding them the stats!!:D
The man doesnt have a clue what he is talking about and why RTE persist using him is beyond me.Sonia was quiet good commentating on Beijing so its a pity she wasnt used.

Very good outdoor womens 4x4 there now,Cuddihy,Shinkins,Furlong,Andrews and Carey!

:D I laughed at that too. Jerry Kiernan repeated his claim that Kelly Proper is the second best hurdler behind D O'R. For once, however, he didn't suggest anyone should move up a distance. Instead, he suggested that David McCarthy's move up to 800m hasn't worked out.

I agree regarding Sonia being good on analysis.

Also was the girl that won Kenyan or Ethiopian?

It said Kenyan on the news there but I thought she was Ethiopian (could be wrong on that)

Chuffed Cullen got bronze - we've had our fair share of 4th places.
Thought she ran a very good race.
Freaked we didnt get a bronze in the 4x4 so close...
Over all I thought we did very well.

kind of off the subject but I think the next 2 years will determine if KP will be a long jumper or a hepathlete...

Yeah, she was Ethiopian (or former Ethiopian), but why let the facts get in the way of a good story :p

While he is wrong hes not far off,she was ranked 4th in Ireland in 2006 with 8.99 for 60mH and has improved physically no end since then so id imagine shed bring that down considerably now.She was also ranked first in the pentathlon. http://www.athleticsireland.ie/content/?page_id=140
In saying that id imagine she will be staying at long jump for the foreseeable future!
Unbelievably i found myself agreeing with him though that she should have been used on the 4x4 team.

Is there a link to the 3000m womens final, I fell asleep last night before it came on

Fair play to her on coming away with a medal.

But...theres always a but, is it just me, or does anyone else think she pushed her heat too hard. Surely in a championship the objective of the heat is to get to the final, not to run the legs off yourself. I have a feeling if she was just a tad fresher she could have stuck for home earlier and possibly got a silver or gold (would have been tough with no sprint).

Okay they were factually a bit off at times, but I think the commentry was pretty good - better than the beeb's cheerleading. Coughlan was in form and got it right on hottie Alminova - I thought she'd run away with the final but he predicted that she wouldn't be able to chain them together at that age and he was dead right.

Brilliant running again from Cullen - if she hadn't stumbled or been boxed in who knows what might have happened - she would have been a bit faster almost certainly.

Anyone have the splits on the 4x400?

Did they slow way down on the last leg or was the competition stiffer?

Someone (McKieran?) suggested the starting order should have been different. Looked to me that it was just right - put your last runner in a good position to strike for home - anything different and they might have been out of contention coming into the last leg.

Yeah, they're grand most of the time, but they do have their comedy moments :P. I agree whole heartedly with you re: the beeb. Their cheerleading, as you put it, can be nauseating at times. Edwards can be a right twat at times and Jackson reminds me of the commentator from the film Dodgeball, who constantly states the obvious. I can't remember what their names were, but I wish the two female presenters would return (the Scottish one, and the one who presents Question of Sport).

There are several different theories on the ordering of a 4x4. With the team we had, I think they got it as right as they could've, without the big names being in the squad. As you said, if Andrews and Furlong hadn't run the first two legs, the likelihood is we'd have been way out of it before the last two legs. We have to remember aswell that Hynes and Bergin weren't even 400m runners really as far as I know before this season, so that makes it all the more commendable. The idea of using Proper is an interesting one. She's run a 23.92 200m this season, which suggests she could've done something useful. Don't know if 400m would've been that bit too far.

Andrews was high 53, Furlong high 52, Hynes low 55 and Bergin high 54 but those are based on my own timings off the telly. Pretty good and all close to their starting block PB's when you take into account 3 had rolling starts. Think Hynes was probably the best of them relative to her PB and she also gave the British girl a nice dig on the take off:D Relays do really bring the best out of people.

lol, usually when I think of armchair athelete, I think of a fat guy in a string vest who's only exercise is clicking buttons on the remote control, not a stopwatch. Tingle, you continue to impress me.

I sit there wearing my Nike one piece, spikes, Oakleys just to get in the mood.

Speaking of Oakleys indoors, someone needs to tell Jenny Meadows to take those shades off when she runs indoors (and especially when trailing in 4th). Rule #1 of being a sprinting prima donna (who has moved up to 800) is that if you are going to wear shades running you gotta win and win well like in a Jeremy Wariner when he was still with Clyde Hart kinda way.

It was the same for two of the Spanish men. The 16-year-old sprinter who came last in his 60m heat, and the multi-eventer who wore them for all seven events and finished last. D'oh.

I know that Meadows is sponsored by that sunglasses brand to wear them, and so is some american sprinter.
