Running Sky In Other Rooms - What Equipment Needed?

    Hi folks,

    Need a bit of advice. I've the skybox in my sitting room in the house. All the other rooms in the house are wired from the attic.

    So what equipment would I need to get the Sky feed showing in all my other rooms?

    The Sky installer mentioned a magic eye or something.

    A very simple and cheap way would be to run a coax lead from RF2 on sky box to a 4, 6, 0r 8 way distributor in loft then a coax lead from loft to each room.

    On ebay you can get what you need, ie f connectors, cable and the distributor.

    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/6-Way-Ports-Cable-Signal-Satellite-TV-Aerial-Splitter_W0QQitemZ290296780533QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_ConElec_TVAerials_RL?hash=item290296780533&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=72%3A1683%7C66%3A2%7C65%3A12%7C39%3A1%7C240%3A1318

    The trick is to select an RF channel on the sky box that does not interfere with the aerial channels. This is trial and error.

    If you want to change the sky channels from the bedroom then that is another story and more money.

    As already stated, u need to run a cable from the back of the sat box from downstairs from the RF2 locatation on the back of the box to the attic where ur cables are located.

    U will then need a digital/bi directional amplifier to allow the signal to pass to the rooms you require. My favourite are made by Global and come as follows

    F140 = 4 rooms
    F180 = 8 rooms
    F280 = 16 rooms
    http://www.xtendedplay.co.uk/global-f140-pro-distribution-amplifier-way-prodid-52.html

    the F140 doesnt require a power socket as the sky box will power it up but the other models will require to be plugged in. You will then require a magic eye for each room that you wish to be able to change the channel on the sky box...eg the bedrooom, kitchen etc...these amps will enable you to use an eye for each room depending on the size of amp you choose.

    I'm not bothered about being able to change channels when in that room. Once I can just get my SKY upstairs. Don't mind losing the aerial channels upstairs either. Just want the Sky.

    I'm not very technical though and haven't a clue of all the cables etc. so what would be the easiest way for me to do it?

    I might be able to get an electrician to call. Would they be able to do it easily?

    No, most electricians haven't a clue about coaxial wiring. They'd probably daisychain it like a ring main!

    Get a qualified aerial installer who specialises in distribution systems.

    Will that not cost a bomb though?

    A lot cheaper than paying a sparky to f#ck it up then paying a competent aerial rigger to sort out the mess!
    Get a local recommendation then get a quote.

    I wanted to do this. This is what my installer did.

    He had previously run sky from the dish to the sitting room on its seperate wire cause "He was not insured to climb into the attic"

    So what the better installer did was He ran the wire from the box into the coax distribution cable from the attic to the sitting room. He effectivly reversed it. Then in the attic he put a splitter and sent it to 2 rooms. This was over kill on my part cause i had to watch the same channel

    Have you considered Changing your LNB and buying a freeview box for the bedroom. It gives you a little more freedom ie she watches soaps you watch what ever is on the free view????

    What's LNB? And how much is a freeview box? Does it just connect into the TV and pick up the channels.

    The LNB is the head on the sat dish. a freeview box is 99 euro No when you fit the other lnb you take a lead from it to the box. Supply and fitting of the box works about 250 euro but you dont get RTE 1/2 TV3 But you will get this with rabbit ears.

    You can't connect a Freeview box to the LNB. (Well you can but it won't receive anything, since it needs an aerial.)

    i am sorry to say your information is incorrect. the aerial is only for rte1/2 and tv3 tnag

    You won't receive anything by connecting a Freeview box to the LNB. It needs a satellite TV receiver like Sky, Freesat or FTA.

    This is all going a bit over my head lads. Will go looking for someone local that will be able to sort it out.

    Thanks for the help.

    I think Joey the Lips means "Freesat" ;)

    I think your continued reference to freeview box and its inability to use an LNB is just serving to confuse less technically savvy posters.

    This is why we need an unambiguous name for the Irish DTT service, so we don't have posters mixing up satellite and terrestrial terminology:)

    My status as novice sat user or man who cannot take remote control from the moth has been confirmed

    Sorry I did mean freesat

    You need something like this

    No problem - I think the more experienced users knew to what you were referring - my post was aimed at Sam Redford who is very experienced and should not have been quite so roundabout in making the point about the difference between the satellite and terrestrial services;)

    I just answer the question. I don't want someone buying a Freeview box, connecting it to an LNB, then discovering he wasted his money.
