this has been bothering me quite a bit lately. to the people on the island and some individuals off the island it seems that its the most important place on the whole planet. surely a place of great importance wud have some kind of name. right?

You're assuming that it is an island, and that it's on the planet. :D I'm not sure either are true. It fits therefore that it doesn't have a name and is simply "The Island". Plus it sounds more mysterious.

According to Lostpedia the writers call it 'The Eyeland'.

I agree with Sad Professor, it's not having a name definitely adds to the mystery

It does have a name. Didn't you hear what Charlotte said?

    "This place is death."

    ;)

its an interesting point alright. considering that people have known about the island for hundreds, if not thousands (the statue), of years, its hard to believe that nobody has come up with a name for it, but its possible its mane has been lost in history..........

    The iiiiiisland [/creepy voice]

    Definitly better kept mysterious....

Still, if I crashed on an island, I'd be pretty bored. Especially in the season 1 scenes on the beach when it was all about survival. You'd think somebody named the island after themselves Lockeland or Sawyer Islands or something....

I think it should be called Scottland after the bestest character.

    Don't they mean "The Island"

I think they're holding it back for the big payoff at the end of the show and the island's name will turn out to be
    Achill
