Vista giving me hassle

I'm running Vista Home Premium 32-bit, whenever I close the last window associated with My Computer, Vista kicks back an error saying that Explorer has caused a problem and has to be restarted, it'll restart no problem. Tried defrag, reg cleaner, virus scan, nothing. Any other windows that I have open Firefox and the like have no problem, anyone have any ideas???

    Thanks.
    D.

Some 3rd party programs install shell extensions that hook into explorer, e.g. install winzip and it installs a shell extension to include itself in the menu when you right click on a file.

Some of these can be problematic.

So you can try to uninstall programs that have these extensions, concentrating on any that might be amateur efforts.

You could create another user account on the computer to see whether the issue still occurs.

    If you're adventurous,
you can download the autoruns utility by Sysinternals
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb545027.aspx
You can see the subcomponents autostarted by explorer.

You can break windows with "autoruns" so be careful what you change.

Leave all the stuff listing Microsoft as publisher alone, and just untick, don't delete entries.
Also click on save in the auroruns menu to create a backup before you start changing anything.

So start autoruns, look at the explorer tab.
Look for the subsections listed as <regkey>\Shellex\ContextMenuHandlers

Consider unticking some NON MICROSOFT entries, one or two at a time and testing to see whether it stops the issue.
