the xfm shows are brilliant, thanks to karl.
the podcasts are listenable, thanks to merchant.
the office was amazing, thanks to the cast.

his standup is terrible, I cannot understand how people think otherwise.

Don't find his stand-up funny I'm afraid. Turned off Fame half-way through. The Office was pretty good, prefer the American version though.

I truly believe Merchant is the brains behind the writing of both The Office and Extras. I like Gervais, his TV material (Though the American Office has totally surpassed its original), and podcasts but his stand-up is simply not funny. He over plays his fame and comes off as a bit of a prick on stage.

    Merchant is very funny

Some of Ricky's material is very good, verging on brilliant verging on obvious!

His delivery is Awful verging on Dire and he has no patter in his style whatsoever

As for playing up on his fame, seems to me he is basically ripping the P*ss outta the people in his audience who are there just becasue he is famous???

    Fair play to him!

I am absolutely obsessed with the Ricky Gervais Show, The office, Extras and I thought his politics stand up show was funny but am not a fan of animals and Fame. That being said I think his ego is way to big and he seems a bit like a bully. I can safely say I would hate him in reality. He has nothing to do with the ricky gervais show being funny other than when he laughs. Its all Karl. The only thing that Ricky does in that show is interrupt Karl telling a hilarious Monkey News story by saying something like "IT COULDN'T HAPPEN" and shouting over him.

I couldn't agree less. And I've watched enough of the American version. I know allot of people make their minds up before giving it a chance.

Nice one! The man is hilarious. The UK version of the Office is one of the funniest things I've ever seen, a work of genius. Extras was absolutely brilliant aswell. Podacasts with Stephen Merchant and Carl Pilkington arn't quite as funny but still worth a listen!

Have to say I didnt find his stand up show quite AS funny as the other stuff but still good. And if he comes to Ireland I'd say I'll be going!
