My Bro is trying to remove subframe bushes in my 01 mondeo.

Its a pain in the a$$ he says, is there an easier way to do this without removing the complete subframe, exhaust or whatnot?

Also he says there are loads of bushes all over the place and alot seem to be damaged or in need or replacing.

I thought there was just the one type of bush that needed replacing? He has 4 bushes but told me some of them are different underneath.

    Thanks...

There was an article on this in car mechanics magazine awhile back. I think they found them easier to replace when using powerflex uprated bushes as there is less pressing in required than with the original ones.

When you say sub frame bushes, do you mean engine mounts or wishbone bushes? From what I remember the sub frame had 4 bolts and was directly mounted to the chassis legs.
In the early models the wishbone bushes weren't great and needed to be 'presuaded' from the wishbones, (passenger side was a pain because the bolts needed to be brought up but somebody had put a gearbox in the way...) the rear engine mounting was also prone to failure but was handy enough IIRC.

Rear subframe bushes? Yes, there is a special tool for doing these.

where can I get this gadget so? He has replaced one bush already at considerable trouble but the knocking still persists. I have three more bushes (new ones) but he says there are other bushes underneath that are different shape/size to the ones he got from the ford dealer.

so he is thinking of giving these 3 bushes back and asking to order the others (different shape/size ones!) if that makes sense, he replaced the one bush which he figured was buggered.

unreal, why do ford make a balls of things have they consideration for the mechanic at all...!

There are loads of sources for these. Any sykes stockist would have them. It may not be worth your while to buy the tools to replace all the bushes though as you will likely only need them once.

Slightly OT, but this is a perfect example of why garage labour rates are at the level they are. Gone are the days that a bag of rusty spanners and a lump hammer were all that was required.

couple of good posts on there on how to remove the subframe bush.
If there badly gone, they should come out easy enough. 2 of mine fell out. I replaced with poly bushes. There are mixed reviews on the tool. I attached a large rawl bolt to a long bolt, pushed the bolt into where the rubber bush bolt went and i tightened , it expanded, and allowed me to pull out the bushes, but they were badly worn..
need to clean up the area. If you putting back in new rubber bushes, youll need to take the subframe off and glue in the bushes and let them set over night. hence why people go for the polys.
