Fifth Gear disappeared???

I was tipping along in 5th gear, when all of sudden it started revving like crazy, and no response from the accellerator. The gear stick did not pop out of place or anything.
I dropped down to fourth and that was grand, but I then tried to go up into fifth again, and it was like been in neutral.

Would anyone know if this is the gear box, or some smaller problem(hopefully)?

By the way, the car was a 02 Laguna diesel.
    Thanks
    Brian

I'd say it's the selector that slots the gearstick into the gear, doubt it's the gearbox as if it was it's likely all or most of the others would be gone too.

Hi I would say that it is the selector rods or bushings. These tend to go after time and will enable you to change some gears for the rods being ok say for example 1-4 gears but the rod which controls the 5th gear could be gone. If it was the gear box you would so know about it as it would make a horrible grinding noise as the gearbox is controlled by wheels which lock into place. Be the rods which they are not expensive to buy but on some cars depending where they are can be tricky to replace this is why you may find the labour quite high to replace them. Probably 2 hours labour max.

    Hope this helps.

Thanks Guys, It turned out that the 5th gear had been all worn down or all the cogs had broken off it. It didn't need a whole gear box change, as fifth gear in the laguna was outside the gear box. The mechanic managed to source one of the parts second hand and the other new. €400 total. So not too bad.

Meh, I prefer Fifth Gear. Far less showy and more realistic.
