Ok lads, I want to subscribe to Setanta but I've never subscribed to Sky and don't plan to so I read on one of the threads on here, that if you pushed them Setanta would send you out a card, Well I've made two calls to Setanta and tried to get them to give me a card, the chap told me to get a Freeview card, the northy failed to understand we don't use Freeview cards in the south. Has anyone on here A)actually managed to get a card from Setanta? B) Found another way to subscribe to the satellite service?

    Thanks

I have helped setup a few people for Setanta without signing up for sky.

The first way is as you stated yourself and obtained an english FTV card, however I beleive new cards are on the way out so I wouldnt suggest this method.

The second way is to obtain any old Sky card, might be worth asking on the board for one and ringing setanta with those card details. They can activate the card for use just for their channels, they do not have any access to the original card-holders details so effectively any card will do...

I tried this approach they won't allow the sky card in someone elses name, to avoid UK viewers from activating Setanta Ireland using an old Irish sky card, you have to have a sky card in your name now to activate with Setanta :(

Its all a bit of a mess really. What happens if your sky card gets damaged, stolen?? Do setanta then just say, well thats the life, we cant send you out a replacement card so we'll say bye bye to your business???

Setanta really are a joke, now theyve lost some of the premiership football I cant see them lasting much longer.

To the OP - I would hold off if I was you. The misinformation from that northern call centre is something else. I was told on the first call that I had to have an *active* sky subscription before I could subscribe. Then was told on the next call that I could simply go buy an FTV card at any electrical store - I reminded them that I was in the south and ask her to check with her supervisor and they came back and confirmed the same rubbish!

Setanta have in the past issued their own (satellite) subscription cards. I think this is still possible but the call centre drones would not relent.

I ended up buying a second hand box and (out of contract) skycard - which you can do very cheaply. There is no problem in so far as you can get them to update the card simply by giving them the card viewing number.
However, big problem on the horizon is the imminent card change. I have been continuously mailing Setanta over the last 6 weeks (i wont waste my time being misinformed over the phone by one of their drones) - and the bástárds simply won't answer my query. But I will persist until such time as I get an answer.
So in your case, I would avoid signing up right now. If it was any other organisation, you could tell them why you won't sign up right now but with this lot, they will just say ok, and put the phone down.

As Eurorunner correctly pointed out the Setanta phone staff seem to either been ill-informed or simply dont care to secure some business.

You can effectively get Setanta using either of the options I have described and I have done this on a number of occassions most recently within the last two weeks using an old Irish card...so persist and you should be able to get what you need. Setanta also issued the Shop I work for with a card directly which turned out to be an FTV card, but it was a battle to get it and an even bigger battle to get it activated
