I am in Munich at the moment and from the tips I have read here you just get to the tents very early (before 10am) and hold your ground all day.

I was there 2 years ago and stayed at the MEININGER city hostel.

    http://www.meininger-hostels.com/en/meininger-hostels/hostel-hotel/citieshouses/munich/

Its about 5 minutes walk to octoberfest and 15 minutes from the train station as far as i can remember.

Book accommodation as early as you can wherever you stay, it fills up very quickly. Its cheap enough to cancel if you change your mind. A lot of hotels don't charge cancellation fees.

You can book a table in some tents, and some tents only serve you if you are sitting down, we found there was no craic in them. Other tents are a lot more relaxed. If you don't mind standing don't bother booking. You may end up booking in one of the duller tents as well.

The tents close at 10 and empty by 10:30, so then you either go to your hostel/hotel bar/campsite, or head into the city center.
Definitely go, you won't regret it.
