No camera, speaker, mic & gps. No guarantee you'll get software upgrades for free.

The new iPod Touch (2nd Gen) Have the ability to use an external Mic. You can buy a headset/earphones with a built in Mic and an extra ring on the 3.5mm jack to accommodate it.

You can then use Fring to make Skype calls. Sound quality isn't much better than PSTN phones but is fine given that.

As for Google Maps, I've not used it myself but yes it is available and pre-installed. Info here.

so with a little work and a bit extra money its essentially an iphone - minus a phone and you dont have to pay a bill for it and its cheaper

might get one - want an iphone but dont want a phone, dont want to switch networks and dont want a bill phone

The maps are irrelevant. You can't replicate the simulated GPS function on an iPod Touch, which also means that apps which use that function won't the same.

Theoretically using WiFi and VoIP you can get something similar to an iPhone, but in reality Wi-Fi coverage and availability isn't even remotely close to sufficient to give you something that you can use as a phone/mobile internet device.

I was going to moan about you calling it an 'itouch' but then you redeemed yourself by giving it it's correct title in your post. So... instead I'm just going to edit the thread title!
