I'm just about to start watching the full box set of Blackadder, and I'm just interested to hear people's views on the series.

my only experience of it has been the odd episode here and there when it was on BBC2 many years ago, but I don't remember much at all.

I'm a Rowan Atkinson fan so I'm optimistic. I've watched his 'One Man Show' many times, with Angus Deayton I think it was helping him, and I adore it. This on top of all the Mr Bean stuff.

is Blackadder all good? Is it a classic? or might it be a bit of letdown in parts?

I'd love to hear people opinions...

Its nothing like Mr Bean. Oh no.

May your enjoyment of the series not be overwhlemed by its sheer compunctuous pericombobulation.

Good choice of boxset. A series that will stand the test of time. The last ever episode was amazingly well done too.

Well, the picture quality of the boxset leaves quite a bit to be desired. It's basically old VHS standard, but that's the fault of the BBC for not looking after shows once they've been aired (erasing some of Dad's Army, the colour recordings of Steptoe and Son, and Not Only... But Also, even though Peter Cook offered to pay for the tapes!) and not the BlackAdder crew. Luckily the comedy shines through the grainy picture.

Mostly good, but with some letdowns I'd say. The first series is very patchy, and doesn't completely work. Rowan Atkinson plays the character much more like Mr. Bean, which doesn't really lend itself to the dialogue. It picks up though. The second series is on a smaller scale (sets as opposed to real castles), but much greater comedically. Atkinson finally pinned down the attitude and mannerisms of Edmund, and the whole thing is better than the first. And it keeps getting better. Hugh Laurie steals the show in series 3 (the odd dud episode notwithstanding), and series 4 is fantastic from start to poignant finish.

In conclusion, not the perfect pinnacle of British comedy that some make it out to be, but very very funny, and largely great, led by a great performance by Atkinson (in the last 3 series at least). Blackadder's Christmas Carol is worth a watch, but Back and Forth just doesn't feel right (I think it's the lack of an audience and the single camera set-up).
